KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia – DoubleTree by Hilton Kuala Lumpur in partnership with HOPE Worldwide Malaysia hosted a Chinese New Year “Kiddies Yee Sang Lunch” together with cycling legend Robbie McEwen last on 16 January 2014. McEwen, the triple winner of the Tour de France’s Green Jersey sprinter classification, was in Kuala Lumpur for his official role as Cycle Asia Ambassador during the OCBC Cycle Malaysia 2014.

The charity lunch saw selected underprivileged children happily tossing “Yee Sang” with Robbie McEwen at Makan Kitchen, the hotel’s signature restaurant showcasing Malaysian specialties. As a cultural immersion for both the children and McEwen who hails from Australia, a celebratory feast featuring Chinese heritage dishes like the Slow Braised Ginger Duck with Hoy Sum, Cantonese Steamed Glutinous Rice with Yam and Waxed Meat, Wok-Fried Tiger Prawns with Asparagus and Braised Fish Maw with Chinese Mushroom were prepared by Makan Kitchen’s Chinese Chef, Cheong Boon Fei.

The lunch was followed by an autograph session by McEwan on his book “One Way Road: The Autobiography of Robbie McEwen, Three Time Tour de France Green Jersey Winner”. McEwen personally presented each book to each of the children to encourage and motivate them to stay positive and never give up. McEwen then proceeded to autograph several children story books taken from the Hotel’s “Books To CARE” programme, a corporate-responsibility project undertaken by DoubleTree by Hilton Kuala Lumpur that collects pre-loved books from the public and share them with underprivileged children to enhance their literacy, education and personal growth. These books are displayed in a book closet located at hotel’s reception. Once full, the books will be donated to HOPE Worldwide Malaysia.

“At DoubleTree by Hilton Kuala Lumpur, we capture our brand essence: ‘where the little things mean everything’. Children have always been our focus and with the support of sportsmen like Robbie and partnership with HOPE Worldwide Malaysia, we want to seal in the merging power of sports and learning in the lives of these special children. We hope the collaboration with Cycle Malaysia and Robbie himself today would have provided more inspiration and fun for the children to remain positive and ambitious for their future ahead,” said Ian Barrow, General Manager of DoubleTree by Hilton Kuala Lumpur.
