Petronas Brings Together Oil and Gas Industry For Safety in MMEA’s “Sahabat Maritim” Programme

EIGHT oil and gas companies today signed a collaboration agreement with PETRONAS and the Malaysia Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) to be part of the on-going “Sahabat Maritim” safety outreach programme for fishing communities in Sabah and Labuan. Witnessing the ceremony were MMEA Deputy Director General (Operation), Rear Admiral Maritime Dato’ Che Hassan Jusoh, Deputy Director General (Management) of MMEA, Encik Samsuni Mohd Nor and PETRONAS General Manager of Internal Communications, Encik Khairuddin Jaafar — representing PETRONAS Senior General Manager, Group Strategic Communications, Norliza Kamaruddin.

In his speech Zamri said that oil and gas operations are driven by stringent procedures and guidelines to mitigate all potential hazards that could lead to any untoward incident.

“We are responsible to put in place all necessary measures to ensure the safety of people living around the areas where we operate including our staff, contractors and the surrounding communities,” said Zamri.

“With this collaboration PETRONAS and its partners can now synergise all efforts to ensure the highest safety and health standards and safeguard the community, environment and their respective operations.

In addition, Rear Admiral Maritime, Dato’ Che Hassan Jusoh said: “MMEA welcomes this effort as it is consistent with the strategic goals of the ‘Sahabat Maritim’ programme. With the strong collaboration with players in the oil and gas, shipping, tourism and fishing industries MMEA hopes that the extensive participation the maritime community will further strengthen the security of Malaysian waters.”

To date, PETRONAS together with MMEA have engaged fishing communities in Lahad Datu and Pulau Matanani in July and August respectively.

The final leg of this year’s “Sahabat Maritim” programme is scheduled to be conducted in Labuan in October 2015.
