Don’t be fooled by his boyish looks. Nuar Md. Diah co-founded and has been leading Gaya Travel Magazine for the past 8 years Bio looks into what inspired him to produce this cutting-edge Kuala Lumpur-based travel magazine including his role as the Chief Executive Officer of the printing house YBA Print Sdn. Bhd.
Born and raised in Johor, the second child out of 4 siblings, Nuar Md. Diah has always been visionary. Graduated from Universiti Tun Abdul Razak in Information technology (IT), it did not take him long to realise his passion in publishing.
When interviewed by Bio, we could see that he is self-assured, positive and charmingly playful. When asked about how he brings himself to where he is now, Nuar said that to become successful, one must be humble to first learn from other people. Being tenacious, hardworking, down-to-earth and optimistic, Nuar is well-versed in identifying opportunities that appear along the way.
Nuar began his career at Suri Media Group as a photojournalist. Through his positive and just-do-it attitude, he quickly learned the ropes on how to publish and manage magazines, eventually leading him to open his own publishing company, Media Chandi Group, back in 2003.
The company first published Gaya Travel Nusantara Magazine in late 2005. When Bio asked on why he picked the name ‘Gaya’ (literally means ‘style’ in Malay), he shared that his inspiration came from one of the aspects of human behaviour when travelling.
As the magazine grew from strength to strength, Nuar started to rope in fresh talents to further strengthen the magazine. He is the type of boss who gives his employees immense creative freedom. Nuar feels that in order to create something extraordinary, his employees must be given their own space to expand creatively amidst a homely working environment and family-like atmosphere.
Because of that, Gaya Travel Magazine has successfully prevailed against the predicaments that normally plague new magazines, apart from establishing strong and trustful long-term working relations with all of his business partners.
Since he is in the travel industry, we at Bio were curious on how Nuar travels. As a traveller, Nuar is the kind of person who enjoys every single bit of everything. He confessed to Bio that he prefers the freedom of being able to travel as at when and where he pleases, indicating that he is more of an eclectic traveller who enjoys the convenience of being able to just pack his bags and leave.
His belief influences his travel preference, driving him to travel to Islamic destinations such as Makkah in Saudi Arabia to perform minor pilgrimage or umrah, including other historically significant attractions.
Besides that, Nuar Md. Diah also loves the natural environment – he enjoys lush and pristinely green surroundings. One of his outdoor experiences that he relishes until today was when he had to stay overnight in a tent during a storm with the rain continuously gushing into it!
One of the ecologically-friendly properties that he considers to be one of the best eco-tourism destinations in Malaysia is Tanah Aina Farrah Soraya in Raub, Pahang. However, Nuar Md. Diah is also in his element when staying at a swanky and urbane setting like the Westin Kuala Lumpur, being a suave entrepreneur that he is.
