Since 1990, the Adelaide-based opera company, Co-opera, has been undertaking extensive tours of fully-staged opera productions to regional and remote towns around Australia, and occasionally overseas.

First time in Malaysia, Director Frank Ford A.M. has adapted the popular Strauss operetta “Die Fledermaus”, with its 11 cast members and 9 creative team members, under the title of “The Revenge of the Bat”. Die Flerdemaus by Johann Strauss is a timeless European classic musical comedy in three acts, popular since 1874. This sparkling new production of “Revenge of the Bat (Die Fledermaus)” is a winning match for Co-Opera’s unique, vivacious and irreverent style.

Sung in English, the stage is glamorously decorated according to 1920’s Australia art decoration. Ford has written new dialogue for his new adaptation, and provided a prologue tells the story of how Dr Falke was hideously embarrassed by his best friend Eisenstein, after a drunken masked ball, leaves the Doctor naked in the centre of town with only his mask to cover his crown jewels. This hideous embarrassment in front of the whole town requires revenge! Thus the stage is set for the wonderful music of the Waltz King, Johann Strauss, to lead us on a merry musical chase, with a cast of loveable characters.

The operetta is directed by Frank Ford AM, a freelance writer, director, dramaturg and drama lecturer. He is an author and director of opera, music theatre, cabaret, experimental theatre, modern and classic drama and multi-media productions. His plays, adaptations and cabarets have been performed in Australia and overseas.

Brian Chatterton OAM is the musical director of Die Fledermaus. He has been Musical Director of Co-Opera since its inception in 1990. He was formerly Head of Performing Arts at the South Australian College of Advanced Education, Director of the Elder Conservatorium and Dean of Performing Arts at the University of Adelaide.

The lead role of Eisenstein played by Tasso Bouyessis, an award winning Australian operatic tenor whose vocal repertoire encompasses a wide range of styles which include opera, oratorio, music theatre as well. Other cast members include Sara Lambert as ‘Adele’, Lynette Harris as ‘Rosalinde’, Nicholas Cannon as ‘Dr Falke’, Robert Macfarlane as ‘Prince Orlovsky’, Alberto Abate as ‘Alfredo’, Hew Wagner as ‘Dr Blind’, Rod Schultz as ‘Inspector Frank’, Lisa Cannizzaro as ’Sally’, James Moffat as ‘Frosch the Jailer’ and last but not least, Elanor Brasted as ‘Ida’.
