1st October 2013, Shah Alam – The internet has created a whole new breed of writers these days. The accessibility to reach instant audience has empowered many to write about almost anything of interest and some have become instant success overnight. Such is the freedom and advantage of having the world at your fingertips. Smartphones and tablets have become a staple accessory required to be in touch with friends and keeping with the affairs of everyday life. Social media applications such Facebook, Twitter and Instagram, to name a few, have become the basic tools of communication, making it very accessible for everyone to stay in touch. The trick is to make your input and entries interesting enough for people to follow you online and keep subscribing to you. This is where information and expertise is lacking.
Identifying a need to empower bloggers with depth and skill, Tourism Selangor has embarked on a project called ‘#TSBreakaway’, to gather top bloggers and photographers who have successful online sites to share their expertise with budding new bloggers, especially those who blog about travel, on an all-expense paid programme. It will include a series of workshops and on-the-field training, enabling the group to interact among each other while guided by a guest mentor to perfect their skills and polish their talents.
Twelve bloggers will be carefully selected from a contest where participants are required to submit a video as part of their entry. The programme is open to all bloggers in Malaysia, Indonesia, Brunei and Singapore who are above 18 years of age and have an existing blog and a valid passport. Submission of entries is already open since 16th September and will close on the 11th October 2013.
All successful entrants will be notified and shall be announced on the 13th October 2013. The ‘Xplorers’ will then begin on the 5 days 4 nights learning tour programme commencing on the 26th October 2013. They will be taken to several popular tourist spots around Selangor, as well as some places off the beaten path. During these outings is when they will be given the opportunity to mingle with fellow bloggers, sharing experiences and exchanging ideas. There will several workshops for bloggers where they will meet notable guest mentors such as Dina Zaman, Vignes Balasingam and Ashraf Saharudin all experts on their own, who will help them sharpen their skills in photography, writing and further explore other areas related to online social media.
To make the entire programme even more interesting, the ‘XPlorers’ are required to submit a minimum of 5 blogs of their experience from the trip at the end of the programme and best blogs will stand to win attractive cash prizes including the Grand Prize of RM10,000.00.
Programmes such as this are few and far between, Tourism Selangor recognizes this as an opportunity. To groom a niche group of bloggers by providing the right tools and skills, who in return will be able to contribute to the travel community with good blogs and attract more visitors to Selangor.
