Located in the heart of Bandar Baru Bangi, Wadihana Islamic Kitchen (WIK) is just a stone’s throw away from its sister restaurant, Wadihana Islamic Steakhouse (WISH). While WISH serves 100% western dishes that even foreigners would approve, WIK serves a wider variety.
WIK offers Malaysian, Western, Japanese, Italian and Mexican dishes on its menu.
However, for true-blue Johor food fans, they would be delighted to know that the founder of WIK, Tuan Haji Abdul Hamid Hamat is proudly Johorean. So proud that even the name Wadihana was taken from the close knit neighbourhood where he grew up, located right in the middle of Johor Bahru. Sadly, Wadihana no longer exists due to the city’s rapid development. However, the memory remains and some of the dishes are nostalgically named.
Dishes such as Laksa Johor, Soto, Rojak Tauhu, Lontong, Mee Siam Kuah, Nasi Ambeng and Murtabak are among the southern specialties offered here. Most of these dishes are made using time honoured family recipes, so customers are assured of their heavenly taste.
Other offerings on the menu include other Malaysian specialities like Nasi Goreng Tok Mak; Western specialities like Pan Fried Salmon; Japanese specialities like Teppanyaki; Italian specialities like Spaghetti Carbonara; and Mexican specialities like Chicken Fajitas. The menu has more than 50 items – customers should their own time browsing the wide array of appetisers, light meals, main courses, rice, noodles and high tea selection. Not to be missed are their delicious desserts like Creme Brulee and Panna Cotta.
As the name suggests, WIK follows the Islamic principles of food preparation, which are halal (meat are sourced from animals slaughtered according to the Syariah and void of anything that is haram or forbidden) and toyibban (clean and safe). Customers can be rest assured about the quality of food served here.
WIK was born out of necessity. Tuan Haji Abdul Hamid said he found that there are many food lovers who shun away from enjoying the food they love, especially the international cuisines, simply because of the food’s halal status. He assembled a team of 30 chefs to join the Wadihana family, all qualified to prepare 100% halal food so that Muslims can enjoy food without being suspicious about its status. He considers this as his responsibility for the Muslim brotherhood.
WIK also has its own cold room for meat storage and its own in-house butcher to ensure the freshness of the meat that comes out from both WIK and WISH kitchens. All food and beverages are also prepared from scratch, including the sauces.
WIK wants customers to liken itself as a house belonging to a relative. The Wadihana family intends to make their customers feel that they are stepping into their favourite aunt’s abode is delighted to welcome and feed them with good food. Even the restaurant’s layout is like a big open dining kitchen where customers could easily observe how the food is prepared.
The restaurant occupies two shop lots at the ground level and able to comfortably accommodates up to 100 customers at any one time. WIK also offers catering and private function services.
There are already plans for the restaurant to expand to Johor Bahru and Cairo in the near future. Gaya Travel hopes that the dream of sharing good halal food to other parts of the world will happen, much to the delight of Muslim travellers.
