Women Ran to Stand Up and Shine at Marathon

The 3rd Malaysia Women Marathon 2015 (MWM 2015) coincided with the International Women’s Day. Women put on their running shoes and came together not only to join the marathon but to show their support to one another. There has been great response from the public as more first time runners have joined compared to previous years, whereby 40 percent of the full marathon are first time runners.

The marathon this year saw as many as 4,000 running all four categories, MWM 42km full marathon, MWM Etiqa Half Marathon, MWM Citi 10km Run and MWM AstroBella 5km Fun Run.

8th March 2014, Shah Alam – The support was tremendous this year as the 3rd Malaysia Women Marathon 2015 (MWM 2015) coincided with the International Women’s Day. Women put on their running shoes and came together not only to join the marathon but to show their support to one another celebrating this day for women. There was great response from the public as more first time runners have joined compared to previous years, where 40 percent of the full marathon are first time runners, they have dared to stand and shine. Coincidentally, that is the theme this year for the marathon, ‘Stand Up and Shine’.

The marathon this year saw as many as 4,000 running all four categories, MWM 42km full marathon, MWM Etiqa Half Marathon, MWM Citi 10km Run and MWM AstroBella 5km Fun Run.

The start and finish points were at Dataran Kemerdekaan Shah Alam, where MWM 42km full marathon was flagged off at 4.30am, followed by MWM Etiqa Half Marathon at 5.30am, MWM Citi 10km Run at 7.00am and MWM AstroBella 5km Fun Run at 7.30am by the respective sponsors. The runners ran along a scenic route of Shah Alam that covered the Blue Mosque, the park, Stadium Malawati and Istana Bukit Kayangan, through the residential areas of Shah Alam. The safety of the runners is first and foremost, as such security and patrol by race marshals and police were stepped up this year.

Talks and expo by sponsors and invited guests were conducted on the 5th and 6th of March at Concorde Hotel prior to the race event. There were fashion shows, Yoga sessions and talks by accomplished marathoners, Aida Othman, Cheryl Bihag and Kelly Lim.

“We are grateful to all of the sponsors for the support given this year towards MWM2015 and to MBSA and State Government for their great show of support. Especially, Women and Health and Sports Exco members who offer their encouragement and assistance wherever required,” said Puan Noorul Ashikin Mohd Din, General Manager of Tourism Selangor Sdn Bhd.

Etiqa, Citibank and AstroBella were main sponsors for the event this year, organised by Irongirl Malaysia and coorganised by Tourism Selangor Sdn Bhd. Inov8 was the sponsor for MWM Etiqa Half Marathon prizes, 4th to 7th position and MWM Citi 10KM prizes, 4th to 7th position.

This Marathon is one such example, as well as a great opportunity for us to celebrate our women in conjunction with International Women’s Day,” said Nikki Grant-Cook, Country Human Resources Director, Citibank Berhad.

Garmin was the sponsor for full marathon prizes, 4th to 7th position. Bizzy Body sponsored all other consolation prizes, from 8th to 12th position. There were also other sponsors who collaborated for the event, NTV7, Concorde Hotel, Perodua, DOVE, Celebrity Fitness, Nestle, Tesco, KT Tape, as well as, Inov8 and Compressport Malaysia as Official Shoes and Official Compression Wear respectively. Winners of the race won cash and prizes worth RM10,000.00 in total and the coveted titles of MWM 2015.

MWM 2015 was promoted very early in March of last year and has continued its promotions at Marathons around 3 Asia and Australia. The Race Director, Karen Loh was sure to be at the marathons expos and spreading the news of the event held in Shah Alam as part of the promotion.

“We are very honoured and feel very compelled to organise such a great event. Feedback from the participants, are very encouraging and they are the ones who motivate us to organise MWM 2015. The sisterhood among the runners that were built amongst them is very endearing and this is one of the events they look forward to every year”, added Karen.
