Jaime Dempsey rides around the Philippines in Ride ‘N Seek Season 4 on HISTORY Channel
Jamie Dempsey, the intrepid lady from the United State who travels around South East Asia on her Harley Davidson motorcycle, was in town recently. As an unconventional traveller, she gets to experience the local lifestyle in different islands of the Philippines, which the audience can follow via Ride ‘N Seek Season 4 on HISTORY Channel. The following are some of her sharing during her recent stop in Kuala Lumpur.
Interviewer: How did your earlier travels to Malaysia and Brunei change you and what is the one important lesson that you took away when you visited these destinations? Back in the last few seasons.
Jaime: I don’t know, I can’t answer this question. What was the one important lesson from Borneo and Brunei…
Interviewer: Anywhere, anywhere, or maybe just in the Philippines then, the recent one?
Jaime: The one important lesson that I took away from Borneo was to make sure if you’re riding off-road, you need to have proper dirt tires on your bike because I didn’t have the proper tires and I fell off and broke all kinds of things on the bike.
Interviewer: And how did you adjust to the South East Asian climate, food and lifestyle?
Jaime: It’s not really difficult for me to adjust to the food or the lifestyle. It’s also the thing for me is that I’m on the road and I’m on a motorcycle, so I do not really have the typical, so I’m not really expecting any kind of typical lifestyle in Asia and I’m going to see very remote places where things are much simpler. It’s not really an adjustment that’s very hard to make – it’s more of something that I’m seeking to find and when I find it, I’m just there to enjoy it. So seeking means new experiences and cultures, it’s not an adjustment I have to make, I’m just excited to have them. As far as the climate, that is something that I have to adjust to. The heat can be really intense when you’re on the bike when you’re wearing all the gear. So I tried to make sure that I drink lots of water and I force myself to drink a lot of it during the day to stay hydrated. And the food, I love all the food in South East Asia so it’s really not hard for me to adjust to that, I like trying all the new things, halo-halo is one of my favourites.
Interviewer: As a lady traveller, did you have to face a certain degree of unwelcomeness or prejudices in South East Asia, and how did you manage the situation?
ADVERTISEMENTS
Jaime: I didn’t come across any, as a matter of fact, nothing negative at all. I, maybe, was expecting to, but most people, at this point especially, filming Season 4, a lot of people have started to recognise the show and see me, and know me as this woman that travels on a motorcycle. They mostly just get excited when they see me and want to see the bike and talk to me about where I’ve travelled, so I don’t get any negative feedback at all and if anything, I’m more of the one that’s surprised.
Interviewer: What advice would you give travellers from the States who have never been to South East Asia?
Jaime: What advice would I give people… Gosh that’s a broad question. What advice I would give to them… Well, there are so many options when it comes to South East Asia, think about what you’re looking for, are you looking for a mountain retreat? Are you looking for beaches and to explore the waters and scuba diving? There’s so many, South East Asia has so many different things to offer so you really kind of have to narrow it down, especially if you only have a couple of weeks to explore. So think about what you’re looking for, then research what places are best for that thing. I’m fortunate enough to have experienced a lot of different environments, so I’ve been scuba diving, I’ve been riding in the mountains, I’ve visited villages, so think about what’s important to you and explore those areas.
Interviewer: And where do you think you’ll be headed to next, after the Philippines?
Jaime: I want to explore further, actually one place that’s really intrigued me is Japan. So, if I could go to Japan, especially to experience a little bit of difference in climate, that would be really really cool so I’m crossing my fingers for Japan.
Interviewer: Would you know if there’s a next season up for that?
Jaime: I don’t know what’s in store for next season. If it happens, it is all up in the air right now, hopefully, we’ll find out as time goes on.
