Future World: Where Art Meets Science transforms with new immersive installations
From 6 July, ArtScience Museum’s iconic permanent exhibition Future World: Where Art Meets Science is set to re-enchant visitors after an extensive month-long refresh of the City in a Garden gallery.
A collaboration with acclaimed international art collective teamLab, Future World has welcomed close to 4 million visitors since its opening in 2016. It has continued to evolve over the years as art, science, and technology progress, with this latest redevelopment ushering in another new chapter for the exhibition.
Future World will be bidding goodbye to three artworks, Media Block Chairs, Giant Connecting Block Town and Sketch Piston, to make way for three exciting new interactive installations that will open the door to different worlds.
A Musical Wall where Little People Live expands on the whimsical realm first introduced in A Table Where Little People Live, offering visitors more ways to engage with this community of miniature characters who run around playing within their world. Visitors can interact with the Little People through a special technology that allows them to attach objects – such as mushrooms, sheep barns or long sticks of ice – to the wall, causing these objects to appear in their world. Depending on the shape and placement of the stamps, the little people will slide, jump, or climb atop them, finding different ways to play with delight.
Meanwhile, A Window to the Universe where Little People Live allows visitors to influence their world using newly designed light pens and light stamps to draw lines and create shapes. Depending on its colour, each line has a special power that interacts with the little people in a unique way – for example, yellow lines send the little characters bouncing and flying, while blue lines increase their speed, making them run faster. The shapes created with light stamps also appear and move within the little people’s world as they play more energetically with every new line and shape added.
Additionally, this iteration of Future World presents an upgraded version of the audience favourite, Sketch Aquarium. Now titled Sketch Aquarium: Connected World, this installation presents visitors with the opportunity to transcend physical boundaries and connect with people from other parts of the globe.
Visitors can pick from 12 aquatic creatures to draw and colour – ranging from a shark, jellyfish and seahorse to the newly-added sea anemone and anchovy. Upon being scanned, their creations will then come to life and swim out into the massive digital ocean. While visitors can interact with the marine creatures and feed them virtually through touch, this installation is also connected to other Sketch Aquariums and Sketch Oceans around the globe, allowing the drawings to travel to other cities worldwide. Likewise, aquatic creatures drawn by visitors at similar teamLab installations around the world may also venture to our shores and appear within this artwork.
Future World has expanded other artworks to further enhance the visitor experience. One highlight is a new version of Sliding through the Fruit Field, a colourful slide with playful interactive projections that has delighted visitors over the years. This installation has increased in size, offering a larger sliding area and additional projections.
The large-scale immersive mural Proliferating Immense Life – A Whole Year per Year has also become more expansive inviting visitors to explore and interact with constantly changing, seasonal flowers as they grow and transform throughout the seasons.
