“During the race, Harrif Salleh was leading with only 5 more laps to the finish line, but he encountered a technical difficulty with his bike, and there was no time to make adjustments. Hence, I stepped in on behalf of the team to take the lead in the final sprint, and we managed to finish at top 15! We all worked as a team; we couldn’t have done it without the other”, commented Zamri Salleh, Rank 15 in Hong Kong Criterium, Terengganu Cycling Team.

Recognised by the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI), the criterium race was staged in Hong Kong’s giant world bazaar Tsim Sha Tsui.

The first day (10th October) saw the International Criterium Race, not to mention the CEO Charity Ride, the Men’s Open Race and the Women’s Open Race. Four other programmes were held the following morning (11 October), including the 35km Challenge Ride, 10km Community Ride, Kids & Youth Rides and Family Fun Ride. In the 35km Challenge Ride, the Tsing Ma Bridge was opened for the first time for a cycling event – to 1,700 overseas and local cyclists.

Altogether over 3,600 visitors and local residents participated in the cyclothon. Meanwhile, a cycling carnival was staged at the Hong Kong Cultural Centre Piazza in Tsim Sha Tsui, with booths selling food, beverages and cycling accessories, as well as games and live music performances.

Title and charity sponsor SHKP has pledged a 3-to-1 matching funds raised, which will be donated to The Boys’ and Girls’ Clubs Association of Hong Kong, to Mother’s Choice and The Salvation Army via The Community Chest of Hong Kong for welfare programmes targeted at children and youths in need. An estimated total of HK$3 million was raised from the event.
