Tourism Selangor Rises Forward Despite the Industry’s Turmoil
BERLIN, March 2020 – Delegates from Tourism Selangor have made their way to Berlin, Germany from the 2nd to the 6th of March despite the cancelation of ITB Berlin 2020 due to the Covid-19 outbreak. The delegation was led by Encik Azrul Shah bin Mohamad, General Manager of Tourism Selangor alongside Yang Dipertua Tuan Mohamad Zain bin A Hamid, President of Kuala Langat District Council, Yang Dipertua Shukri Bin Mohamad Hamin, President of Hulu Selangor District Council, En Munasor Aliyasak, General Manager of Galeri Diraja Sultan Abdul Aziz and several other State’s tourism officers.
The cancellation of the renowned annual Travel Trade Fair did not hinder the delegation’s vision in showcasing the State of Selangor’s tourism appeal to the European travel market. Hence, progressive promotional initiatives were duly-carried out to promote Selangor’s current tourism promotions, introduce cultural and heritage segmentation to the European market and to expose the European tourists to the hidden gems and traditional cultural practices that Selangor has to offer.
One of the elements made priority to the trip was the Business-to-Business (B2B) sessions engaged with Berlin-based tour, travel and PR agencies. Each session was packed with promoting the experiential tourism packages through the Selangor Community Host Programme that has trained, recognized and produced 51 locals as tour guides; mandated with the role to expose tourists to the local community, heritage and culture.
The launching of the Selangor Up-Close 2020: Europe Edition Travelgoue Competition; #SelangorThroughMyLens was the main highlight during the Meet & Greet Session with Berlin Media held at Tourism Malaysia Embassy on March 5th. The session was carried out as the Preview to Selangor Up-Close 2020; a sneak-peek on the entry requirements of the Travelogue competition’s first-ever Europe Edition. Selangor Up-Close 2020 is exclusively extended to European media, content creators, travel bloggers and vloggers, and social media influencers.
Selected entrants will be taken on an all-sponsored 6 days 5 nights trip to Selangor that will be held from the 4th to 9th August 2020. By having key opinion leaders from Europe joining the programme, it will directly give access to the European travel audience of Selangor as a preferred travel destination especially in the South East Asia region.
Participants of the travelogue competition will be selected based on their strong influential position in Europe with a feasible profile. The best 3 of the bunch will walk away with exclusive cash prizes and the results will be announced at the next International Tourismus-Börse (ITB) Berlin in 2021.
Apart from B2B sessions with local travel and tour agents, a Government-to-Government (G2G) session was carried out at the Embassy with H.E. Datin Sarah Albakri Devadason, Ambassador of Malaysia to the Federal Republic of Germany and Tourism Malaysia officers in Berlin. Whilst on the mission, Tourism Selangor also had an online and live streaming session with several industry players to discuss further on the resurgence of the tourism industry after the removal of ITB Berlin from this year’s tentative due to the spread of Covid-19.
Through this visit, the State of Selangor through Tourism Selangor is making a bold move by reaching out to the European market to attract them to travel into Selangor and hitting the target of having 8 million tourists in the State by the end of the year following the Visit Malaysia Year 2020 campaign. Tourism Selangor also wishes to expand their network and bring in efforts to recover the tourism industry from this current outbreak.
