Things to Do in Almaty During Winter
Almaty, Kazakhstan. Not exactly the first place that pops into your head when you think of “winter vacation”, right? But let me tell you this: Almaty is a straight-up, no-filter-needed, frosty-weather paradise! Imagine snow-dusted mountains, hearty Kazakh feasts, and a rich cultural mix that makes your head spin (in a good way).
Here’s things to do in Almaty during winter:
The Flight: Flying Bougie on a Budget with AirAsia X

Let’s start with how I got there: I flew on AirAsia X and opted for the much coveted flatbed seat, which is the budget-friendly version of flying first class. Think reclining seats, extra legroom, and the actual chance of arriving without feeling like a human pretzel. Plus, having enough personal space to lean out and peep at Kazakhstan’s snow-capped mountains and landscapes from the window as the aircraft approaches the destination? Priceless…
Exploring Almaty: What to See & Do
Ascension Cathedral & 28 Panfilov Guardsmen Park

This is THE Instagram spot in Almaty – a pastel-coloured Russian Orthodox cathedral set against the white winter landscape, looking straight out of a fairy tale. The surrounding park is a peaceful escape, perfect for strolling and pretending you’re the main character in a snow-covered romance movie.
The Green Bazaar: Bring and Extra Suitcase

Kazakhstan’s street markets? They are clean, presentable, and organised, making them all must-visits, especially the Green Bazaar that is packed with local spices, dried fruits, and traditional Kazakh snacks like kurt (also known as salty dried cheese – this is an acquired taste, but hey, since you are in Almaty, you must try it).
Medeo Skating Rink: Where Even Non-Skaters Will Have Fun

Fun fact: Medeo is the highest ice-skating rink in the world. Did I bust my butt multiple times? Absolutely. Was it worth it? Also, absolutely. Even if you don’t skate, just being here with those mountain views is simply an uplifting experience.
Shymbulak: Skiing with a Side of Kazakh Hospitality

Ski resorts? They might be overrated; unless you’re talking about Shymbulak! It has the Swiss Alps vibe minus the Swiss Alps price tag. The slopes cater to all skill levels, and even if you’re more into après-ski rather than actually skiing, the hot drinks and mountain views are truly chef’s kiss.
Ethno Village: Time Travel, but Make It Kazakh

If you want to really experience Kazakh culture, Ethno Village is a must. We’re talking traditional yurts, horse-riding, and feasting on beshbarmak (Kazakhstan’s national comfort food comprising either horse or lamb meat with noodles).
Why You Need to Book That Flight
Almaty is an underrated gem, and I’m here to spread the word. Between the stunning winter scenery, next-level food, and unique cultural experiences, this city deserves a spot on your bucket list, so be sure to book a flight to Almaty on AirAsiaX soon!
