Good to know:
Peak season in Chiang Mai is from November to February, when travellers can experience crisp weather, lantern festivals, and serene mornings. Combined with world-class hotels like the Chiang Mai Marriott, Chiang Mai is an ideal MICE and leisure hub, where heritage, nature, and hospitality unite in perfect harmony.
Transformation & Vision
Under the visionary leadership of the hotel’s affable, passionate, and astute General Manager Mr Rajat Chatterjee, the rebranding exercise was far more than a cosmetic change — it was a bold reinvention that seamlessly blends contemporary luxury with the cultural soul of Northern Thailand.

“This transformation allows us to honour Chiang Mai’s rich heritage while delivering the elevated experiences that define Marriott hospitality.” Mr Rajat Chatterjee, General Manager, Chiang Mai Marriott Hotel
The journey from Le Méridien Chiang Mai to Chiang Mai Marriott marked a pivotal moment for the property, which Mr. Chatterjee describes as “a seamless evolution rather than a revolution.”
In collaboration with the property owner Asset World Corporation (AWC) and Marriott International, the transformation elevated the property into a new benchmark for MICE and leisure travel in Chiang Mai, a vibrant hub that merges global sophistication with local authenticity.
Renovations began in 2021 and progressed floor by floor while the hotel remained open. “We renovated while still operating the hotel — five or six floors at a time, blocking one above and one below to ensure no noise disturbance,” he recounts.
The full rebranding officially launched on 1 November 2023, only after every detail had been perfected. “All rooms and public spaces are 100 per cent complete. Even the hotel’s Italian restaurant Favola, which had minimal changes, was refreshed with new access points and forward-thinking design adaptations,” he adds.
Design & Sense of Place
As in many of Marriott’s marquee properties, the hotel is replete with the mesmerising interplay of textures, tones, and motifs indigenous to the destination, ensuring that it has a strong sense of place.
Gaya Travel Magazine notices that the interiors of Chiang Mai Marriott Hotel feature a richer range of textures than those of other Marriott marquee properties that the magazine has covered before, rendering it exceptional.
The hotel’s sumptuous colour palette exudes warmth and sophistication. The interior design cues are derived from the sculptures of the two royal elephants sighted at the lobby, whose ceremonial adornments and carriages influenced the motifs found throughout the hotel, such as on the lobby pillars and elevator landings. The arched shapes found throughout the hotel’s interiors – more evident at the public areas within the swanky Plaii Building – recall the howdah fitted onto the royal elephants once used by Lanna royalty.
At the same time, the lampshades and feature wall behind the bed headboard in most guestrooms carry the illustrations of the unique parrot flower (Impatiens psittacina), native to Chiang Mai. The wooden slats that adorn the feature wall and air-conditioning vents inside the room are an homage to the wooden slats characteristic of the traditional Lanna windows to promote cross ventilation, which guests could identify when visiting the Buddhist temple complex Wat Ton Kwen or Wat Intharawat, about half an hour’s drive from Chiang Mai Marriott Hotel.
“Visually stunning, characterised by detailed representations of Thai and Lanna identity inspired by 19th-century prosperity.” Asset World Corporation
Rooms & Facilities
Chiang Mai Marriott Hotel’s 383 well-appointed rooms and suites, ranging from 37-square-metre Deluxe Rooms to the 144-square-metre Diplomatic Suite, embody refined comfort and intuitive design.
Floor-to-ceiling windows open to breathtaking views of Doi Suthep and the Chiang Mai city skyline, while marble-clad bathrooms, rain showers, and plush Marriott bedding ensure modern indulgence.
Gaya Travel Magazine particularly appreciates the abundance of international sockets, eliminating the need for travellers to bring along adaptors, and the evening turndown service, which adds a comforting touch of care.
The infinity-edge swimming pool, 24-hour fitness centre, the children’s activity space called Chang Kid’s Room, and Quan Spa — all located on the fourth floor — create an effortless retreat overlooking Doi Suthep. The pool lounges on the edge of the swimming pool are popular among guests because they are designed for ultimate relaxation, perfect for guests wishing to unwind while taking in the skyline.
Elevated Dining & The Plaii Building
Culinary excellence takes centre stage at the Chiang Mai Marriott.
At The Ping Cuisine & Bar, guests start their day with an impressive breakfast spread, featuring a dedicated Asian corner serving delicious dim sum and congee alongside vegetarian and halal options. For lunch and dinner, the spicy crab meat in yellow curry, grilled sea bass, and honeycomb smoothie are stand-outs.
Food enthusiasts will adore Han The Chinese Cuisinel with its offering of crispy duck, steamed fish, chicken with cashew nuts, and dim sum, while Favola delivers exquisite Italian dishes such as Mediterranean sea bass with poached egg, followed by white chocolate and pistachio mousse.
Meanwhile, the newly unveiled Plaii Building — opened in 2024 — is the hotel’s crowning achievement. This dynamic lifestyle and event complex features the Plaii Eatery Café & Bar, Wang Bar, golf simulator rooms, and karaoke lounges, including the Plaii Ballroom, which is Thailand’s first ballroom with 84 metres of wrap-around 360-degree immersive LED walls and 430 square metres of flexible space that redefines what an event can be, making it ideal for galas, product launches, and destination weddings.
“The Plaii isn’t just a space—it’s a storyteller.” Mr Rajat Chatterjee
Hotel’s Service Philosophy

If there is one defining quality of the Chiang Mai Marriott experience, it is the heartfelt service. Staff are attentive, swift, and genuinely warm — all hallmarks of the Thai spirit of sanuk (joy) and kreng jai (consideration).
“Service isn’t scripted; it’s sensed,” says Mr Chatterjee. “Hospitality is an industry of feelings. If our team positively influences a customer’s emotions, they will return.”
Guests are sure to receive hyper-personalised touches — from herbal welcome teas during check-in to custom pillow menus and concierge-led temple treks — reflecting Marriott’s promise of ‘Wonderful Hospitality. Always.’
Hotel Team & Leadership

The Chiang Mai Marriott hotel team comprises over 300 associates, 75 per cent of whom are from Northern Thailand. Diversity enhances the guest experience, with Mandarin-speaking chefs, Malaysian F&B leaders, and local artisans contributing their unique expertise.
“Putting people first is our core value,” beams Mr Chatterjee. The hotel invests in continuous training, partnerships with hospitality institutes, and inclusive leadership programmes, providing opportunities for the next generation of Chiang Mai’s hoteliers to thrive.
“Of course, people do ask, ‘What happens if they leave after the company develops them?’”, which Mr Chatterjee then cleverly quips by quoting the British mogul Sir Richard Branson when asked the same question: “What if we don’t train them and they stay?” Based on Gaya Travel Magazine’s experience staying at the hotel, guests can rest assured of being well taken care of by the hotel’s attentive and efficient staff, who are indisputably well-trained.
Conclusion
From its impressive interiors and visionary design to its innovative dining and ground-breaking event spaces, the Chiang Mai Marriott Hotel surely redefines Northern Thai luxury. Every corner reflects the spirit of Lanna heritage, re-imagined for the modern traveller – sophisticated yet soulful, exquisite yet warm.
Without doubt, Chiang Mai Marriott Hotel isn’t just a place to stay; it’s a place to find your balance and become invigorated. Whether for business or leisure, this re-imagined gem invites guests to embrace the essence of Northern Thailand; rich in texture, steeped in culture, and elevated in experience.
The Gaya Travel Magazine sincerely expresses deep gratitude to Chiang Mai Marriott Hotel for making the writer’s stay at the hotel possible and ultra-comfortable.
