Merang Restaurant @ Sutra Beach Resort & Spa
Merang Restaurant is a modern restaurant with a touch of traditional aesthetic. Located by the beach, Merang Restaurant offers diners a relaxing dining experience. Glossy dark brown woods infuse exclusivity to the interior. The carvings across the restaurant are clear indication of strong influence of Malay culture that is very close to the heart of the owner. Wooden furniture is presented in contemporary way giving a balance to the combination of modern and traditional set up.
For dinner, I was served with three special local delicacies that the restaurant is known for. The first menu I had was “Ketupat Sotong”. This traditional dish is usually served for special guests. Ketupat Sotong is actually squid that has been stuffed with sticky rice and served in coconut milk – the combination gives the dish a unique flavour. The coconut milk further enhances the taste of this delightful dish.
As I was enjoying the scenic view of the sunset, the chef came in and served me with “Sate Lekor”, a recipe that the chef had created himself. This dish begins with the “keropok lekor” cut into chunks and dipped in flour, then deep-fried together with prawns. Truly delicious, this dish is specially served with a special homemade chilli sauce.
For dessert, I tasted two very special local desserts, “Tepung Bungkus” and “Akok”. Tepung Bungkus is made from rice flour and filled with coconut kernel that is cooked with brown sugar to add sweetness. After one bite, I just couldn’t bring myself to stop eating it entirely.
After having my fill, I stepped out of the restaurant to the beach feeling totally satiated. The fascinating tasting session I had earlier truly made my day. Sitting by the beach while listening to the sound of the ocean was a perfect way to conclude my day. Merang Restaurant is definitely a memorable place for not just its succulent dishes but also its relaxing surroundings.
