Petronas Contributes Towards the Preservation of Orang Ulu Sape Music

Lan E Tuyang comes to the festival with 2 sapes, a percussionist and a warrior dancer for Rainforest World Music Festival 2013
PETRONAS today contribute RM50,000 to Sarawak traditional music group Lan E Tuyang to assist in their efforts to preserve, nurture and promote the Sape music, as part of PETRONAS’ continuous commitment to the preservation of Malaysia’s traditional arts and culture.
Sape is a traditional and indigenous Orang Ulu musical instrument that produces haunting and mesmerizing sound which PETRONAS feels ought to be preserved and promoted as the tunes are in danger of being forgotten due to lack of interest among the younger generations.
The monetory contribution was presented by PETRONAS’ Senior General Manager for Group Corporate Affairs Division, Dato Mohammad Medan Abdullah to LAn E Tuyong group leader and Sape maestro Matthew Ngau Jau in a simple ceremony held at the Sarawak Cultural Village (SCV), some 40km from Kuching.
Lan E Tuyang currently performs at the Rainforest World Music Festival 2013 at Sarawak Culture Village from June 28-30.
The musical group is a proponent of the Sape music through various educational and promotional efforts. They have performed in Germany, France, Australia and the US. They also teach Sape music to the younger generations in Kuching and elsewhere.
The sponsorship is conditional on deliverables and agreed plans with the recipient to ensure their endeavours are within the ambit or preserving, nurturing and promoting Malaysian traditional performing arts.
PETRONAS hopes its contribution will help Lan E Tuyang group in its continuous efforts to nurture, preserve and promote the traditional Sape music.
Earlier this year, PETRONAS also contributed RM150,000 to the Dayak Cultural Foundation to assist in their efforts to preserve, nurture and promote the Dayak culture.
The foundation is a proponent of the Dayak cultural heritage, particularly its dance and musical tradition, through various educational and promotional efforts. One of the Foundation’s platforms is its Ethnic Orchestra compromising en ensemble of traditional musical instruments, including the traditional mouth organ, the engkerurai, which PETRONAS feels ought to be nurtured and promoted.
