Kuala Lumpur Joins the World to Mark the EARTH HOUR On 23rd March 2013 at 8.30PM

KUALA LUMPUR, 23rd MARCH 2013- Kuala Lumpur has joined 7, 000 cities across 152 countries throughout the world to turning off the lights tonight for one hour at 8.30PM! This marks the city of Kuala Lumpur’s inaugural participation in this global environmental campaign to make a statement about reducing our carbon footprint.

Earth Hour Kuala Lumpur  officially  launched with the lights out Petronas Twin Towers at 8.30pm tonight by the mayor of Kuala Lumpur. This global iconic landmark with 88 floors on both towers , has committed  to go dark for one hour, and the Tours @live Concert held in conjuction with Malaysian Grand Prix Formula One will switch to glow in the dark performances and celebrate the earth Hour . Scheduled to accompany YBHG Datuk Bandar at the launch is En Hashim Wahir, the CEO of KLCC Properties and YBhg Dato’ Dr. Dionysius Sharma CEO of  WWF Malaysia.

A WWF initiative , Earth Hour is a simple idea that has quickly turn into a global phenomenon. Hundreds of millions of people switching off their lights for one hour, on the same night, to signal their care for amazing planet we call home. Stating from a one-city initiative in Sydney in 2007 , Earth Hour now has grown to the world’s largest campaign for the planet, takes place in more than 7, 000 cities in 150 countries and territories around the world.

        

In Kuala Lumpur, although there have been activities held in conjunction with Earth Hour in previous years, 2013 is there first year that Kuala Lumpur is officially participating with an effort coordinated and speared by DBKL. And the Mayor said before that he hoped this inaugural event would get the full support of all KL Residents  and Business by taking a simple step, to switch  off the non-essential lighting only for one hour. But of course the security lighting, any obstruction lighting, emergency lighting and lights in occupied office will remain lit.

Leading by example, earlier the Mayor has made announcement that all Kuala Lumpur City Hall offices will turn off all lightnings and appliances and issued notice to all KL residents to follow this action.

Under I WILL , YOU WILL pledge campaign, the Mayor have declared his committed to switching off their lights for an hour . And as at morning of 23rd March, the Kuala Lumpur city hall has received written confirmation   from 88 buildings management responded of the Mayor’s pledge, whist another 108 responded  via websites.
