Malaysia Holds Strong Position in 2025 Passport Power Ranking
Singapore has once again secured at the top of the world’s passport power ranking, granting its citizens visa-free access to 193 destinations, according to the latest Henley Passport Index. The index, which ranks passports based on the number of countries their holders can enter without a prior visa, highlights the continued dominance of Asian nations in global mobility. Japan and South Korea share the second spot with access to 190 destinations each, while Malaysia holds the 11th position, offering its citizens visa-free travel to 181 destinations, as per the most recent data from the Henley Passport Index.
The Henley Passport Index, powered by exclusive data from the International Air Transport Association (IATA), reveals a strong performance by Asian countries. European nations also feature prominently, with Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, and Spain sharing the third spot with access to 189 destinations.
For Malaysian passport holders, the 11th place in passport power ranking underscores the country’s significant global mobility, placing it ahead of many other nations, including the United States, which has dropped to the 10th position with access to 182 destinations. The United Kingdom, once a top-ranked passport, now sits in sixth place with 186 destinations.

The index also highlights notable shifts in passport power. India has made the largest jump over the past six months, climbing eight places to 77th, while Saudi Arabia has gained the most in visa-free access, adding four destinations to reach 91.
Dr. Christian H. Kaelin, the inventor of the passport index concept, emphasised the role of strategic diplomacy in enhancing passport strength. “Nations that proactively negotiate visa waivers and nurture reciprocal agreements continue to rise,” he said, noting the competitive landscape of global mobility.
The Asia-Pacific region is also a key driver of growth in air travel demand. According to IATA’s Director General, Willie Walsh, “Asia-Pacific airlines led the way with 9.5% growth in the first five months of 2025,” indicating a robust travel market in the region.
The biggest shifts in passport power ranking
Over the past decade, the global average number of visa-free destinations has nearly doubled, reflecting a trend towards greater openness and mobility. The United Arab Emirates and China have been standout performers, with the UAE breaking into the top 10 and China climbing 34 places.
However, traditional mobility champions like the UK and the US have seen declines in their rankings, underscoring a shift in the global mobility landscape.
