Travelling during Eid season is never easy – traffic congestions are a nightmare! Do you know that our bodies need to rest for at least 15 minutes after every two-hour drive? To give our bodies and minds the time to recover after a laborious drive, what better way than making a stop at one of the many R&R spots all over Peninsular Malaysia! Rehat & Rawat (‘Rest & Recuperate’ or ‘R&R’) areas are equipped with facilities such as restrooms and prayer rooms perfect for travellers. Furthermore, exhaustion often comes hand in hand with hunger. So here are seven R&R spots where you can stop by for a meal or nap to boost your energy.
This R&R is probably one of the most popular rest areas in Malaysia; it is often crowded with tired travellers and hungry diners during festive seasons but for a good reason! Firstly, it is a huge and beautiful place where travellers can relax their muscles on massage chairs, children have their fun time at the playground, and the place is good for strolling around to let the blood circulate around the legs. It also has a huge selection of food stalls, from local to western delicacies and if you’re heading North, may I suggest my personal favourite, which is the super delicious Wantan Mee from Stall 6!
If you’re craving for fresh fruits along your journey back to kampung, you should definitely stop by R&R Bukit Gantang because it is a local fruit haven! Salivate over various types of luscious fruits like mangoes, papayas, bananas, watermelons and the famous king of fruits, the durian! Cultivated by locals, the fruits are all plucked from orchards around the rest area or along the Nouth-South Expressway (NSE). Furthermore, shelters are provided so that you can enjoy your sweet fruits comfortably and feast your eyes over the R&R’s lush, green landscape comprising trees with a clean and comfortable environment.
Hailed as the best R&R PLUS of 2019, this R&R is a one-stop centre. It has a spacious rest area, travellers can stop by at its famed A&W outlet or opt for Malaysian flavours with a vast selection of local dishes – you can try authentic Negeri Sembilan dishes such as Masak Lemak Daging Salai and more! Furthermore, the facilities come complete with Auto Teller Machine (ATM), self-service Touch ‘n Go top-up kiosk, restrooms, prayer rooms, and petrol stations, sufficient to kick-start your energy back on the road!
The first thing that comes to mind whenever I see R&R Ulu Bernam approaching near is Pau Yik Mun! There is no need to trouble yourself to drive to the famous eatery in Tanjung Malim because the delicious pau bun is also available at this R&R. A wide range of pau fillings such as red bean, kaya, and chicken curry are on sale here. You can also purchase frozen pau to bring back for your loved ones (or yourself). By the way, what type of pau do you prefer, sweet or savoury? I like savoury ones!
A unique twist to rest service areas, R&R Jejantas Ayer Keroh is not located by the highway but over the highway! Popular fast-food chains, A&W and KFC, are placed right on the overhead bridge where you can have your meal while looking at vehicles speeding along the highway below, which offer a nice view, especially at night. Moreover, there is a local craft shop and Al-Ikhsan sports outlet if you’re in the mood for a little bit of retail therapy before driving back. R&R Jejantas Ayer Keroh will give you a different experience than your typical rest stop.
A cool breeze can surely freshen you up after a long drive. The lush mountains and chilled air surrounding R&R Genting Sempah make it ideal for travellers to rest for a while, wind down their window to let in the breeze and simply chill! Rather small compared to others, this R&R does not fall short with its two-storey building complete with facilities such as prayer rooms and food stalls. You can even have a cup of coffee and a warm meal at McDonald’s. Be sure to take a short detour to this R&R whenever you’re heading towards or coming from the East Coast Expressway!
After days of eating rendang, lemang and ketupat, you might get sick of them. So, may I suggest a delectable authentic plate of ikan patin masak tempoyak with steaming hot rice at R&R Temerloh on your way back to the city? Ikan Patin is the craze in Temerloh and lucky enough, you don’t have to enter the city of Temerloh to enjoy this lip-smacking dish! Many patrons make their stop at this R&R just to savour this dish; just be sure you come hungry.
