KUALA LUMPUR, 1 NOVEMBER 2024 – Batik Air proudly marked the launch of its third direct route to Sarawak today, connecting Kuala Lumpur with Bintulu and further strengthening the airline’s strategic network across East Malaysia.
The inaugural flight, which departed from Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KUL), was welcomed with vibrant celebrations at Bintulu Airport (BTU). The festivities included traditional bead garlanding for passengers, courtesy of the Sarawak Tourism Board showcasing the unique hospitality and rich cultural heritage of Sarawak.
The warm reception was attended by esteemed VIP guests including Sarawak Transport Minister, Dato’ Sri Lee Kim Shin and its Aviation Technical Advisor, Sio Yew Hua; ADUN Tanjung Batu, Johnny Pang Leong Ming; Bintulu Resident, Datu Nyurak Keti; Tourism Malaysia Sarawak Director, Nurul Ain Mohammed Yunus; and Civil Aviation Authority Malaysia (CAAM) ATS Manager / ATCO, Jobrin Anak Sani, further enhancing the celebratory atmosphere.
Batik Air Chief Executive Officer Datuk Chandran Rama Muthy said that this inaugural flight is a testament to Batik Air’s commitment to connecting Malaysia’s regions and supporting Sarawak’s growth as a key destination.
“By expanding our route network to this vibrant city, we aim to empower local tourism, support regional business growth, and provide travellers with seamless, enjoyable connections across East Malaysia and beyond.”
Bintulu, renowned for its eco-tourism and industrial significance, offers travellers easy access to Sarawak’s stunning natural landscapes and flourishing business environments. As a gateway to outdoor adventures and cultural attractions, Bintulu invites visitors to explore iconic destinations such as Similajau National Park, celebrated for its pristine beaches, lush rainforests, and diverse wildlife, including gibbons, hornbills, and estuarine crocodiles.
In addition to its tourism appeal, Bintulu plays a crucial role in Malaysia’s economic landscape, particularly in Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) production and the Sarawak Corridor of Renewable Energy (SCORE), making it an invaluable destination for both business travellers and investors.
Minister for Transport Sarawak, Dato Sri Lee Kim Shin, expressed his enthusiasm following Batik Air’s expansion of services to cover all four major airports in Sarawak: Kuching, Sibu, Bintulu and soon, Miri in January. This significant development will greatly enhance air connectivity between West Malaysia and Sarawak.
“As we approach the festive season, it is vital that Batik Air ensures sufficient seating capacity for travellers returning home to Sarawak,” Dato Sri Lee stated. “This increased connectivity will not only facilitate family reunions but also support out local economy and tourism sector.”
The Minister also encouraged Batik Air to consider expanding its route offerings to include regional destinations, such as Singapore and China.
The Kuala Lumpur–Bintulu route operates ten times weekly, providing convenient daily travel options with Batik Air’s comfortable Boeing 737 aircraft, available in both Economy and Business Class.
With the addition of Bintulu, Batik Air’s Sarawak portfolio now includes key destinations Kuching and Sibu, offering travellers more options to explore Malaysia’s largest state and connecting East and West Malaysia more seamlessly.
