More than just a place to stay, Iconic Marjorie Hotel Penang celebrates the beauty of Peranakan culture through thoughtful design and modern comforts.

Discovering the Elegance of the Iconic Marjorie Hotel, Penang

Penang always has a unique way of captivating travellers. From its world-famous street food and vibrant cultural heritage to its beautifully preserved architecture, the island never fails to leave a lasting impression. Interestingly, during my stay at Iconic Marjorie Hotel Penang, I discover another side of Penang that is just as memorable, a place where Peranakan heritage meets contemporary luxury in the most effortless way.

As part of Marriott Bonvoy’s Tribute Portfolio, Iconic Marjorie Hotel, Penang offers much more than a comfortable lodging. Every corner of the hotel is thoughtfully designed, blending elegant furnishings, harmonious colours, and intricate Peranakan-inspired details into a space that feels both sophisticated and welcoming. Rather than simply showcasing local heritage, the hotel reinterprets it in a modern context, creating an environment that is authentic, stylish, and distinctly Penang.

A Warm Welcome to Penang

Stepping into Iconic Marjorie Hotel Penang, I am greeted by a lobby that instantly feels bright, spacious, and welcoming. Rather than feeling ostentatious, the space strikes a wise balance between contemporary elegance and subtle Peranakan influences, creating a strong sense of place.

The warm welcome continues with a refreshing glass of lime juice served upon arrival, a thoughtful gesture that is especially appreciated after a long journey. Together with the genuine hospitality of the hotel team, the smooth and efficient check-in process immediately makes me feel at home.

Just beside the lobby is Loom & Leafs Lounge, a cosy café that is well worth visiting during your stay. The inviting aroma of freshly baked pastries wafting from the café tempts me into ordering its Strawberry Cream Croissant, which turns out to be one of the sweetest surprises.

The croissant is beautifully flaky on the outside, while the generous strawberry cream filling is smooth, rich, and perfectly balanced in sweetness. What impresses me even more is its surprisingly affordable price. Considering its generous portion and quality, it offers excellent value for money, making it an easy recommendation for anyone looking for a light snack, a coffee break, or a sweet treat before continuing the day.

Where Heritage Meets Comfort

Stepping into my Deluxe Room, I immediately notice how seamlessly Peranakan heritage is woven into the hotel’s contemporary design. From the intricate wall patterns to the thoughtfully designed tableware and even the packaging of the bathroom amenities, every detail reflects the hotel’s cultural identity without feeling overdone. The result is a space that feels elegant, welcoming, and unmistakably Penang.

Beyond its charming aesthetic, the room is equipped with everything a traveller needs for a comfortable stay, including a coffee machine, mini fridge, hair dryer, and in-room safe. The bathroom is equally impressive, with its sage green mosaic tiles adding a subtle touch of character, while the refreshing bath amenities turn every shower indulgent.

But the room’s piece de resistance is the bed. With its plush bedding system and premium-quality linens, it offers the kind of comfort that is difficult to peel yourself away upon waking up. The experience is further enhanced by hotel’s bespoke Pillow menu, allowing guests to choose Memory Foam, Feather, or Buckwheat pillows, along with calming aromatherapy options such as Lavender and Chrysanthemum, for a more personalised night’s sleep.

The rainy weather outside turns the room cosier. Looking out from the window, I enjoy the panoramic views of the Penang city, the iconic Penang Bridge, and, every now and then, aircraft in the distance. Watching the skyline slowly transform from a misty morning into a glowing evening becomes one of my favourite moments of the stay.

For travellers looking for something a little different, Iconic Marjorie Hotel Penang offers themed Sanrio rooms featuring beloved characters such as Hello Kitty, Cinnamoroll, and Kuromi. Starting from approximately MYR799+ per night for two adults and two children, the package includes breakfast, exclusive themed bathroom amenities, MYR50 worth dining credits, and the delightful Sweet Trio Afternoon Tea for two at Loon & Leafs Lounge. Whether you’re travelling with family or simply a long-time Sanrio fan, such offering add playful touches to your already memorable stay.

Dining at Tiffin Hall

No stay is complete without exploring the hotel’s culinary offerings, and Tiffin Hall is another highlight of my stay. Echoing the hotel’s elegant Peranakan-inspired design, the restaurant exudes a warm and inviting vibe so that every meal feels unhurried and fulfilling.

Each morning begins with the breakfast buffet, where local favourites sit alongside international classics and a selection of fusion dishes. Keeping things simple, I opt for fluffy pancakes served with chicken bacon, crispy potatoes, and a comforting cup of hot chocolate. The pancakes are wonderfully soft and buttery, especially when topped with maple syrup, caramel sauce, and whipped cream, while the hot chocolate is rich, smooth, and just the right level of sweetness.

For lunch, I choose the Beef Brisket, served with creamy mashed potatoes and seasonal vegetables. The beef is beautifully tender, falling effortlessly off the bone, leaving me undeniably satiated.

The real highlight, however, is the Sea-rous Seafood Buffet Dinner, available every Friday through Sunday. As a seafood lover, I head to the fresh oyster station, where the oysters are incredibly fresh and best enjoyed with nothing more than a squeeze of lemon. Another standout is the Grilled Cheese Lobster, where the sweetness of the lobster pairs perfectly with rich, melted cheese topping, a combination that is well worth the wait.

Beyond seafood, the buffet showcases impressive variety of Japanese cuisine, Western favourites, local specialities, live cooking stations, and an irresistible selection of desserts too. Starting from MYR168+ per adult, it delivers excellent value for both its quality and variety.  Whether you’re staying at the hotel or simply searching for a memorable dining experience in Penang, the Sea-rous Seafood Buffet is one that’s well worth adding to your itinerary.

Relax, Recharge, and Explore

One of the things I appreciate most about Iconic Marjorie Hotel Penang is how conveniently its leisure facilities such as swimming pool, fitness centre, spa, and rooftop bar are located on Level 13, making it easy to access different facilities without having to move between levels.

One of my favourite moments during the stay is spending my morning at the hotel’s infinity-style swimming pool with separate sections for adults and children. I swim shortly after sunrise, which I consider as one of the most refreshing moments during my stay. As the morning mist gently blankets the city and the first rays of sunlight light up the sky, the view is calm and almost dreamlike.

After my swim, I spend a few relaxing minutes in the sauna, where the heat helps me unwind before starting the day’s adventure. I am so thankful that fresh towels are thoughtfully placed within easy reach.

Returning to the 13th floor in the evening feels like stepping into a completely different atmosphere. The rooftop bar is transformed into a lively yet snug gathering spot as city lights illuminate the skyline. Guests relaxes over drinks, catch up with friends, and enjoy live music that begins after 9:00 p.m., creating the perfect setting to wind down after a day of exploring Penang.

Another thoughtful and useful feature is the hotel’s complimentary shuttle service. The shuttle brings guests to several popular destinations, including Bayan Lepas, Queensbay Mall, and Chew Jetty in George Town – a boon for those who prefer to explore without driving. A daily shuttle schedule is displayed at the hotel lobby, and guests need to reserve seats on the shuttle at the Concierge counter at least one hour before departure. Since seats are limited, all bookings are subject to availability and driver’s scheduling, so it’s always best to reserve your seat early.

Final Thoughts

What makes Iconic Marjorie Hotel, Penang truly memorable is how effortlessly it celebrates Penang’s Peranakan heritage throughout the entire stay. Rather than simply showcasing it through the décor, the hotel weaves its cultural identity into every space. It is also the kind of place where every corner captures beautiful travel memories.

Yet beyond its stunning aesthetics, it is the hotel’s sense of comfort and homeliness that stays with me the most. Even now, back in Kuala Lumpur, I still catch myself thinking about just how incredibly cosy the bed was. Sometimes, it’s the simplest things that leave the biggest impression.

If you’re looking for a stay that beautifully blends heritage, comfort, and genuine hospitality, Iconic Marjorie Hotel, Penang is certainly the place of stay worth considering whenever you are in Penang, Malaysia.
