Experiencing the Elevated Renaissance Hotels Brand During the Global Day of Discovery Celebration at Renaissance Bangkok Ratchaprasong Hotel
Global Day of Discovery (GDOD) – which is celebrated on the same day throughout the 170 plus Renaissance Hotels properties around the world – embraces local discovery as its defining characteristic in the form of immersive community-focussed events to connect travellers with the vibrant spirit of neighbourhoods wherever a Renaissance Hotel is present. Each property reflects the unique culture and character of its surroundings via thoughtfully designed spaces, besides capitalising on the hotel’s Navigators’ valuable insider knowledge about the neighbourhood on where to savour, shop, or see, which is especially handy for guests who are pressed for time and need suggestions on what is good to quickly experience and understand the destination. Mind you, Renaissance Hotels brand is the only one within the Marriott International stable that offers this Navigator service.
Throughout our stay at Renaissance Bangkok Ratchaprasong Hotel, apart from the electrifying GDOD celebration, the hotel treated its guests to enriching offerings such as tucking into wholesome international menu at the hotel’s all-day dining outlet called Flavors and the incredibly scrumptious three-course dinner at the hotel’s Italian restaurant La Tavola; discovering the hidden gems within the hotel’s neighbourhood, for example, the Thai Railway Museum at Bangkok’s historic former main train station in Hua Lamphong, and unleashing our artistic side by painting on canvas bags that we could bring home at Taiban Cafe while sipping refreshing beverages, all under the guidance of the hotel’s well-informed Navigators; following an effective yoga class that is as good as a total body workout adjacent to the hotel’s pool; and undergoing a rejuvenating Thai massage at the hotel’s Quan Spa.
The trip was indeed an absorbing introduction to what the Renaissance Hotels brand is all about, which espouses personalisation and spontaneity. Being the first lifestyle hotel brand to be acquired by Marriott International, it promises effortless luxury in line with its“All You Need, All in One Place” concept that seamlessly combines unparalleled comfort and indulgence.
About Renaissance Bangkok Ratchaprasong Hotel
Renaissance Bangkok Ratchaprasong spreads across 33 floors. It is centrally located, only a five-minute walk away from the Chit Lom Bangkok Transit System (BTS) station, making it a boon for travellers who prefer beating the city’s traffic by using the efficient and extensive public transit. To know their way around town, guests are recommended to approach the hotel’s dedicated Navigator desk, which is manned by knowledgeable staff deemed as Navigators who can suggest ideas on what guests can do spontaneously or at the spur of the moment for a more rewarding destination experience.
As guests approach the hotel from Phloen Chit Road, one of Bangkok’s major arteries, they would be able to notice that the hotel lobby radiates like a stylish beacon. Once they arrive at the lobby, they are bound to be captivated by the collection of pendant lamps hanging at differing heights above the space, urging guests to look twice. We learned that the positioning of the lamps is intentional because the hotel embodies Renaissance design philosophy, beckoning guests to ‘look and look again’ through the juxtapositioning of high-low elements that pique curiosity, accompanied by fine detailing based on the locale’s DNA. Right in the middle is a pool that alludes to the fishponds generally found in the traditional local houses in Bangkok, believed to attract positive energy and good luck.
Another example of the ‘look and look again’ design philosophy can be found inside the hotel’s elevators: parts of the elevators’ interior cladding seem to replicate the texture of crocodile skin (or is it tortoise shell?), luring guests to touch it so that they can be sure it isn’t exactly the real thing. Just imagine how many bags akin to Hermes’ Birkin could the hotel create if it were to use actual skin or shell…
As guests step into their rooms, they will be greeted by vibrant yet soothing colours and sleek design to reflect the dynamic energy of Bangkok. Guests can witness the city coming alive through the room’s expansive windows that generously let in natural light, so much so that the light reaches all corners of the room, even to the insides of the spa-like marble bathroom due to the transparent glass wall separating it from the rest of the space. The bathroom comes with a standalone soaking bathtub for guests to de-stress and relax after a long journey, a day of endless meetings, or city exploration.
What makes the room more interesting is the positioning of the lights within the room, which are varied and not standardised along the same level, as the extension to Renaissance Hotel’s quintessential design philosophy of high-low juxtapositioning to make guests ‘look and look again’. The room also has sufficient multi-standard sockets for guests to charge their devices without having to bring along portable adaptors.
At the end of each day, guests receive handwritten notes from a member of the hotel’s management team, testifying to the hotel’s commitment to personalisation. On top of that, the hotel deploys customary turndown service so that guests are assured of a good night’s sleep.
And when it comes to sleep, I simply love the plush bedding at Renaissance Bangkok Ratcharasong Hotel! The bed is firm and supports my build, with pillows that excellently support my neck, including a thick duvet that totally embraces me during sleep. The hotel taught me the fact that we actually need both the mattress AND blanket or duvet to create that ultra-snug and enveloped feeling for a deep and restful slumber. Due to the remarkable sleep I had in the hotel, I am not quite sure if I would ever want to stay anywhere else whenever I am back in Bangkok in the future…
Those who prefer a grander form of accommodation should opt for the hotel’s Executive Club or any of the suites that provide access to the sophisticated Club Lounge for a more upscale stay where guests can relish complimentary breakfast and evening hors d’oeuvres in a more exclusive setting with enhanced amenities and the breathtaking view of the surrounding cityscapes. The hotel’s suites are perfect for families or extended stays since they are brightly lit and airy, equipped with luxurious amenities and ample living space. Some suites even have dedicated work areas.
On the hotel’s PL Floor, guests can find the elongated sheltered pool where they can admire the view of the surrounding Bangkok skyline while taking a dip. Adjacent to it are the space where the yoga class takes place and a full-fledged fitness centre named R Fit. In one corner is the entrance door to Quan Spa, where I underwent the signature treatment recommended for all wellness enthusiasts to soothe their minds and bodies: the legendary Thai massage, which does not use oil at all and the masseur applies pressure on certain points throughout the body using her sheer brawn to efficaciously untie the knots and relieve the muscle tensions, particularly on my back, shoulders, and neck.
When it comes to dining, Flavours on the M Floor is an all-day dining outlet that offers diverse menu, including Muslim-friendly and vegetarian choices. For authentic Italian dining that truly transports, head to La Tavola on the 3rd Floor, which serves divine dishes like signature risottos and coastal specialties worth dying for.
Another unique experience that guests should look out for when staying at any Renaissance Hotel is the elevated and theatrical beverage preparation event in the evenings called the captivating Punchbowl Ritual, presented by the hotel’s mixologists using a signature punch bowl that brings together local talent in cocktail-making using indigenous ingredients, music, food, and refreshing concoctions for an unforgettable evening.
In short, whether for business or leisure, Renaissance Bangkok Ratchaprasong Hotel in particular – and the Renaissance Hotels brand in general – ensures that guests’ needs are tastefully met under one roof, made magical through the clever infusion of its location’s indigenous elements, and encouraging guests to enjoy the local delights spontaneously.
