George Town’s 130-Year-Old, Unesco Award-Winning Blue Mansion Celebrates A New Chapter, Launching The Qing Suites
PENANG, MALAYSIA, 10 December 2025 – Across the road from the iconic Cheong Fatt Tze – The BlueMansion, a new chapter in heritage has quietly taken shape. Once the servants’ quarters built in 1904 to sustain life within the grand Blue Mansion, the long-forgotten annexe has now been reimagined into Cheong Fatt Tze – The Qing Suites, a sanctuary that honours the mansion’s storied past while embracing the sensibilities of modern hospitality.
After Cheong Fatt Tze’s death in 1916, the Mansion and its surrounding assets changed hands many times, then fell into disrepair, and were eventually divided and dispersed. Drawn to The Blue Mansion throughout the years, celebrated conservation architect Professor Ar. Laurence Loh eventually took on the restoration of the main mansion in 1989, reopening it as a heritage attraction and 18-room boutique hotel in 1995. In 2000, it won “Most Excellent Project” at the UNESCO Asia Pacific Heritage Awards.
From 2015, under the stewardship of Managing Director Shen Loh-Lim, the Cheong Fatt Tze brand and its hospitality experiences grew from strength to strength. Determined to reunite the annexe with the mansion, Loh-Lim began to brainstorm expansion.
“In 2020, our endeavour finally pushed through, and we started planning and designing, only for work to be thwarted by the pandemic. Work recommenced in 2023, and we inched closer to our vision of becoming one of Asia’s most iconic heritage boutique hospitality brands, whilst remaining an integral part of the fabric of George Town and staying firmly grounded in our values,” he says.
The restoration was again overseen by Laurence Loh and Arkitek LLA, well-versed in the intricacies of working respectfully with a heritage building. Rekindling the connection after more than a century, Cheong Fatt Tze – The Qing Suites have finally been revealed, offering thirteen-elegantly appointed suites and a Traditional Chinese Medicine-focused spa in a tranquil setting.
Here, heritage and modernity converse in a seamless dialogue: lines are cleaner, spaces quieter and comforts more intuitive. More than a reflection of its famed neighbour, The Qing Suites are a continuation, a manifestation of what Cheong Fatt Tze, the visionary tycoon, once hailed as the Rockefeller of the East, might have built today to welcome his most cherished guests. A new rhythm rooted in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) begins, an homage to Cheong Fatt Tze’s father, who was both a scholar and practitioner of these ancient methodologies.
The Rooms
Ranging between 44- 67.3 square metres, each suite has been crafted as a canvas of calm, blending traditional craftsmanship with contemporary design. Art, ceramics and custom furnishings made by local artists and artisans infuse authenticity, while modern luxuries from spacious bathrooms to intuitive in-room comforts make the experience as effortless as it is special. Guests may choose from three categories: the Signature Suites – with front-row views of the Mansion; the Terrace Suites – which
open to a rooftop garden overlooking George Town’s inner-city streets; or the Garden Suites – each with a private walled sanctuary of tropical greenery.
