Grand Ion Delemen Hotel Offered Work Exposure Trainning For Down Syndrome People

Like other Persons with Disabilities, individuals with Down Syndrome are often isolated and restricted from social interactions and job opportunities. It is a genetic disorder caused by the presence of all or part of a third copy of chromosome 21.

While some question their capabilities of being an effective working force, Grand Ion Delemen Hotel, Genting Highlands discovered their potential and initiated a CSR collaboration with Down Syndrome Association of Malaysia to train 24 youths and adults between 16 to 25 years old with learning disabilities to gain working experience in hospitality.

“With this work exposure training, each differently-abled individual is given a fair opportunity to learn operational skills in Front Office, Concierge, Housekeeping and Food & Beverage on a rotation basis”, General Manager, Jack Lim said.

“Throughout the training, they will learn greeting guests at lobby, transferring luggage to rooms, escorting guests to shuttle, categorizing linens, making up beds, refilling amenities and cleaning eating utensils, just to name a few”, he said.

“Put aside the stereotype, look at their ability and not at their disability, even though they are intellectually challenged, they are still able to work in structured roles that are process-driven. Hotel business with restaurants and operational divisions is a good example,” Puan Hanizan Hussin, President of Down Syndrome Association of Malaysia added.

She also proudly shared that the Non-Profit Organization (NGO) had received recognition from Malaysia Book of Records for the ‘‘First Fashion Show by Children with Down Syndrome” in April 2019, featuring the collection from famous local designer, Anas Abdullah.

“It is such a great milestone for us to showcase that individuals with Down Syndrome deserve a fair opportunity to deliver their capabilities as well,” she said.
