KUALA LUMPUR – July 31, 2017 – More Malaysian travellers are venturing out to popular overseas destinations, with several top destinations recording double-digit quarterly search volume growth this year, according to latest data from Hotels.com.
“We have seen a significant increase in interest in overseas destinations, from Macau to London, amongst Malaysian travellers during the second quarter of the year. This coincides with the strong performance of Malaysian Ringgit, which has been named as the best performing Asian currency recently,” said Jessica Chuang, Regional Director for Greater China, Southeast Asia & India for Hotels.com Brand.

Ultra-fancy Macau tops the list
Macau, Osaka and Seoul are the fastest growing destinations for Malaysian travellers during the second quarter of the year. Macau, the Las Vegas of Asia, is known for its ultra luxurious hotels and exciting entertainment and gaming options – there is even a Venetian-themed resort, complete with canals and gondolas for those seeking an opulent vacation experience.
The Thai love affair never ends
Malaysian travellers still love Thailand – Bangkok and Pattaya are listed among the 10 fastest growing destinations for Malaysian travellers when searching for accomodations during the second quarter of the year. Bangkok was also listed by Hotels.com’s latest Hotels Price Index (HPI) as the most popular overseas destination for Malaysian travellers in 2016.
Europeans cities making a comeback
While the latest HPI showed a decreasing appetite for Malaysian travellers to venture to Europe last year, London and Paris are making a comeback during the second quarter of the year.
Paris, traditionally a popular luxury travel destination with fashionable shopping districts like Champs Elysees and the ever-elegant Eiffel Tower, experienced a 23.6 percent quarterly growth during this quarter – making it the fifth fastest growing destination that Malaysian travellers search for.
With iconic shopping districts like Knightsbridge and Oxford Street, wide availability of halal cuisines and familiar English-speaking surrounding, London has always been popular amongst Malaysian travellers. The destination recorded a surge in Malaysian travellers’ interest, with a 15.9 percent quarterly growth.
“Malaysian consumers are generally avid travellers, and as the local economic sentiment improves further, Hotels.com is excited to offer even better values to enhance their travel experience. With 25 million genuine guest reviews, Hotels.com has the insight and information needed to provide Malaysian travellers with personalised experience that fits their travel aspiration well,” added Jessica.
