OldTown White Coffee Experience Centre: Where Ipoh’s Past, Present, and Imagination Converge

Tucked along Ipoh Old Town’s storied Heritage Trail, just steps from the ever-buzzing Concubine Lane, the OldTown White Coffee Experience Centre stands as both a tribute and a reinvention. Housed in a beautifully restored colonial-style building on the site of a former kopitiam, this three-storey landmark reconnects visitors with the birthplace of Ipoh White Coffee while offering a contemporary, immersive experience that goes far beyond a café visit.

More than just an outlet, the OldTown Experience Centre is a thoughtfully curated destination where heritage, cuisine, retail, and art intersect, making it a must-stop for travellers seeking to understand Ipoh’s cultural soul.

A Building That Tells a Story

The OldTown White Coffee Experience Centre’s architecture sets the tone from the outset. Its colonial façade pays homage to Ipoh’s tin-mining-era prosperity, while the interior unfolds across multiple levels designed for exploration and discovery. Natural light filters through the atrium, drawing the eye upward and inviting visitors to linger, observe, and engage. Every corner is intentional, echoing the journey of a humble kopitiam that grew into one of Malaysia’s most recognisable homegrown brands.

Heritage Gallery

At the heart of the centre lies the Heritage Gallery, a quietly powerful space that chronicles the evolution of local coffee culture. Through visuals, narratives, and curated artefacts, visitors are introduced to the rituals of traditional kopitiams, the craft behind Ipoh White Coffee, and the milestones that shaped OldTown White Coffee’s rise from local favourite to international fame.

The gallery does more than recount history by contextualising it, helping visitors appreciate how coffee became a social glue in Malaysian life and why Ipoh remains synonymous with this beloved brew.

Retail Shop: Take a Piece of OldTown Home

Retail Shoppe

Adjacent to the gallery is the Retail Shop, offering a selection of OldTown retail products alongside limited-edition merchandise available only at this location. Thoughtfully designed and exclusive, the items appeal to both loyal fans and first-time visitors, serving as tangible reminders of the experience and of Ipoh’s enduring kopi heritage.

Restaurant: Ipoh’s Comfort Classics, Perfected

The Experience Centre’s restaurant brings heritage to the table with a menu rooted in familiarity and elevated by execution. Signature dishes include the silky Ipoh Chicken Hor Fun, celebrated for its clear yet deeply flavourful broth, and Nasi Lemak with Ayam Goreng Berempah, where fragrant rice meets crispy, spice-marinated chicken.

Dessert and beverage offerings add a modern twist to tradition. Matcha Tau Fu Fa blends Japanese tea notes with a classic local dessert, while the refreshing Matcha Melon Bliss surprises with its playful balance of flavours. No visit is complete without a cup of the legendary Hot OldTown White Coffee — rich, smooth, and unmistakably Ipoh — paired with the timeless Kaya & Butter Toast.

Rising through the building’s atrium is a striking art installation by renowned artist Ernest Zacharevic entitled OldTown, Young Hearts. This creation marks the latest chapter in the relationship between OldTown White Coffee and Zacharevic, beginning with the artist’s iconic Ipoh murals in 2014 that have since become visual symbols of the city.

“OldTown, Young Hearts”: Art That Moves Memory

With the installation, the artist reimagines the spirit of that relationship in three dimensions. The installation begins with a vintage hawker cart and a child reaching toward a suspended birdcage, then ascends into a kinetic mobile inspired by Alexander Calder. Floating kopi-O bags, a girl swinging from a tiffin carrier, children riding a paper plane, and drifting clouds populate the space, representing familiar motifs that feel both monumental and weightless.

Subtly responsive to air and movement, the artwork appears suspended in time. It evokes nostalgia without sentimentality, inviting reflection on heritage, memory, and the boundless imagination of childhood. In doing so, it mirrors Ipoh itself: rooted in the past, yet always in motion.

In an old town rich with stories, this place does more than simply iterate them; instead, it invites you to step inside and be immersed in what has been invigorating Ipoh since the early 20th century…
