Petrosains Kicks Off Year-End School Holiday with Science-Inspired Fun
KUALA LUMPUR, 21 December 2024 – Petrosains, The Discovery Centre, kicked off the school holidays on 21 December 2024 with a day filled with spectacular science-inspired fun and fanfare, featuring a host of workshops, activities, and expert sessions, in celebration of our 25th anniversary of inspiring science, technology, and innovation.
Petrosains hosted a variety of exciting activities, including hands-on workshops and science shows, all aimed at promoting sustainability and STEM education among visitors. For instance, the “Water-Water Everywhere” science show demonstrated the importance of water conservation and management, while the “Pressure Show” explored the principles of pressure and its applications.
These activities were designed to develop analytical and critical thinking skills, as well as foster a lifelong appreciation for science among adults and children.
One of the key highlights was the soft launch of the Sustainability Fun Box, a collaborative project between Petrosains and Ekha. Ekha is a social enterprise that advocates for upcycling, repurposing, and creating sustainable fashion goods.
The Sustainability Fun Box allows users to turn everyday waste into trendy fashion products, promoting a circular economy and sustainability. This innovative project also supports Petrosains’ sustainability efforts by encouraging the public to adopt eco-friendly practices and make conscious environmental choices.
Adding to the day’s excitement, a thrilling drum performance captivated the audience with its vibrant beats and energetic rhythms. The event also featured a delightful face painting activity, which brought an artistic flair and added a fun, colourful activity for the visitors.
Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Petrosains, Ezarisma Azni Mohamad, commented: “Our humble purpose has always been to provide a meaningful and inspiring experience to enhance STEM literacy among communities everywhere. We hope that more young people will embrace a culture of creativity and innovation driven by science and technology, with the goal of supporting the nation in talent building.
We believe that STEM learning must be accessible to communities from all backgrounds, which is vital in helping the younger generation to discover their own potential. This will enable them to be prepared for the future, seize new opportunities, and create solutions in advance,” he added.
The day was further enhanced by the invaluable support of our esteemed key partners, including Ekha, Outclass (AirAsia Academy), and Karangkraf. These partners hosted engaging booths and delivered insightful talks at Petrosains, The Discovery Centre. Visitors were treated to a diverse range of captivating demonstrations and activities, including showcases on creating lanyards from old T-shirts that promote the circular economy. Other activities included a STEM quiz, an impressive book display, and a variety of mini games.
With some 300 exhibits in the science centre, Petrosains offers diverse exhibitions in themed galleries, including Space, an exploration of the wonders of astronomy; Geotime Diorama, providing insights into life on Earth during prehistoric times; and Sparkz, introducing basic science concepts through hands-on approaches.
Other exhibition areas encompass the Platform, offering a realistic experience on an offshore oil rig; and SPEED!, where you can also drive in a car simulator—realising your F1 racer dream.
Petrosains also places strong emphasis on sustainability through STEM learning, featuring the Energy Capsule—an autonomous ride offering light and music experiences, narrating the next technological revolution required to address current real-world issues and future challenges.
Similarly, the Sustainability Gallery aims to educate visitors on measuring and reducing greenhouse gas emissions, exploring new energy options, and integrated solutions to meet the global demand for energy.
