Philea Resort and Spa, Ayer Keroh Melaka – recognised as the largest and log cabin resort in Malaysia by the Malaysia Book of Records alongside a string of other accolades, it is also the first log resort in Malaysia that only uses timber log in the construction of its structures.
The building that houses the lobby and reception stands handsomely during the day and lights up magically at night. For those who are familiar with the movie Lord of the Rings that is based on the novel of the same name by J. R. Tolkien, they are bound to make inferences between the lobby structure and the House of Elrond in Rivendell during the night as it is filled with soft glow of light, soaring roof, huge pillars and organically rustic colours, especially during the night. Recognised as the largest and log cabin resort in Malaysia by the Malaysia Book of Records alongside a string of other accolades, it is also the first log resort in Malaysia that only uses timber log in the construction of its structures. Stepping into Pavilion Room category, which is housed in one of the 180 similar double-storey structures throughout the resort, the strong scent of wood can be smelt from the walls and floors of the building, offering new experience to guests who have never stayed in log cabins before. Gaya Travel team stayed in Room 3139, which faces the beautifully landscaped man-made waterfall, which we consider as a plus feature when staying at the resort. The individual balcony that comes along with each room is also provided with specially made picnic table and benches, perfect for guests to lounge at the balconies while taking in the resort’s tranquil atmosphere.
Apart from Pavilion, the resort also offers other categories such as Philea Suites and Royal Villas, wonderfully luxurious units for guests who intend to go upscale in their accommodation experience. There are 19 units of Philea Suites, all located along the man-made river that runs through the heart of Philea Resort & Spa. The suites are single-storey units that come with balconies, each of them equipped with the ubiquitous picnic table and benches. The bathroom of a Philea Suite is really spacious and ideal for couples seeking an intimate getaway. The two Royal Villas on the other hand are specially built double-storey units located slightly away from the other rooms and sit on top of a higher terrain. Each Royal Villa consists of two rooms with king-sized bed, in-house jacuzzi, individual swimming pool, mini kitchen, living room and gated yard, offering guests total privacy and seclusion. The ultra famous Bollywood actor, Shah Rukh Khan, was one of the big names that have stayed in this lavish property.
Walking around Philea is one experience that guests should not miss due to its calm surroundings, especially at night when the resort lights up. On top of that, it is heartening for us to learn that the resort is also environmentally friendly. As testament to this, the resort has committed to greening the whole area by planting 3,000 trees in its surrounds. If you walk around the resort, you will notice that there are many wooden railway sleepers that are used in the construction of the walkways, fences and steps leading up to the rooms – 8,000 sleepers are used throughout the resort and hailed from Perak. This is another notable effort by the owner (who was directly involved with Philea Resort & Spa’s construction) to further inject ecological elements into the resort and at the same time encourage guests to recycle. Apart from the railway sleepers, the owner also made the effort to bring the pieces of a shipwreck from China such as the helm and wood from other parts of the ship’s body to be used as the lobby decor. The mixture of all the elements that have been put together makes this property a resort like no other.
Other than its architecture, guests will also be able to enjoy gastronomic delights at the resort’s food & beverage outlets. There are five of them, namely Cravo Cravo, Bayu Cabana, Nusantara, Chillout Bar and Tropics Lounge, which serve different type of meals to suit the guests’ cravings without having to step out of Philea’s grounds. All these restaurants serve various types of cuisines varying from Malay and hawker-style fare to Western and Oriental fusion that will surely leave guests satisfied.Though Philea Resort & Spa is great for leisure guests, the resort has also been successfully attracting the meetings, incentives, exhibitions and conferences (MICE) market, including weddings, due to the facilities that it possesses. The Philea ballroom is able to accommodate from 500 up to 700 people at any one time, depending on the concept and arrangement of the event. On that note, there are also relatively smaller function rooms that can fit up to 300 persons at a time, including six meeting and conference rooms for a group as small as 20 persons. Philea Resort & Spa also provides an outdoor circuit that can be used for recreational and team-building purpose set amidst the lush landscape.
Apart from the smartly designed swimming pool by the waterfall, there are other recreational facilities such as the fitness centre, spa, games room and karaoke room for guests to enjoy when being at the resort with their partner or family or friends. The guests may also cycle around the resort or even visit the Butterfly Park located next door.In short, Philea Resort & Spa is a hidden yet easily accessible gem that is nicely surrounded by greenery and possess remarkably unique architecture that guests will surely appreciate.
