Qatar Airways celebrated the launch of its Doha to Langkawi route with a sparkling gala dinner at the Ritz-Carlton Langkawi on 17 October 2019.

The evening was hosted by Qatar Airways Group Chief Executive, His Excellency Mr. Akbar Al Baker, who welcomed VIP guests, including; Chief Minister of Kedah, Dato’ Seri Utama Haji Mukhriz bin Tun Mahathir; Ambassador of the State of Qatar to Malaysia, His Excellency Mr. Fahad Mohammed Kafoud; Charge d’Affaires of the Embassy of Malaysia in Qatar, Mr. Mohamad Shahir Sabarudin; and Qatar Airways Senior Vice President Asia Pacific, Mr. Marwan Koleilat, as well as senior government and airport officials.

In his speech to the VIP guests, His Excellency, Mr. Akbar Al Baker said: “I am happy to be here tonight to celebrate the launch of our new service from Doha to Langkawi and to meet with local VIPs and stakeholders. Qatar and Malaysia have strong political and bilateral ties as witnessed by the recent visit to Malaysia by The Amir of Qatar, His Highness Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani in December 2018. This strong relationship is truly reflected in trade between the two countries, and is expected to top 1 billion US dollars this year, tripling what it was just 12 years ago. At Qatar Airways we continue to demonstrate our commitment with the addition of our third gateway to Malaysia, the beautiful island of Langkawi.”

During the gala dinner, H.E. Mr. Al Baker and Chief Minister of Kedah, Dato’ Seri Utama Haji Mukhriz bin Mahathir had a photo taken holding the 2022 FIFA World Cup Qatar themed jerseys.

Chief Minister of Kedah, Dato’ Seri Utama Haji Mukhriz bin Tun Mahathir added: “I am delighted to have attended this evening’s celebration and proudly welcome Qatar Airways award-winning service to Langkawi. The new service will lead to greater opportunities for Kedah’s increasing tourism industry, bringing the world right to our doorstep to experience Langkawi’s many treasures, including the UNESCO Global Geopark.”

The stylish crowd enjoyed a sumptuous three-course meal, a host of entertainment, including a breathtaking performance from internationally renowned and Malaysian singer/songwriter superstar, Yuna, who had the whole audience up on its feet dancing to some of her most popular hits.

Yuna and her two dancers brought further excitement to the Qatar Airways gala dinner.
