Serai Empire

It has now expanded to become Serai Group that includes an outlet in Empire Shopping Gallery in Subang Jaya, aptly named Serai@Empire and another in Pavilion Kuala Lumpur called Serai Satay Bar.

When Gaya Travel first entered Serai@Empire, we noticed that the outlet has its own character. The restaurant’s interior is designed in minimalist fashion and every table is set with a jar of flowers, lending cheer to the whole ambience. When it comes to food and beverage, Serai offers a variety of mouth-watering dishes and unique drinks with the fusion of Malay, Thai and Western. With two experienced Chefs who are experts in the preparation of Malay, Thai and Western cuisines, Serai@Empire knows how to keep their customers coming back for more.

We had the pleasure of tasting the restaurant’s signature dish, Steamed Seabass with Lime Juice. Served on a fish-shaped steel pot, beneath it was a burner with small flame to keep the sauce and fish warm. It has a tangy sensation of its own that all Thai food lovers should not give this dish a miss. Then came the second dish, Chicken Satay, a renowned Malaysian dish, served with thick peanut sauce, cucumber and onion on the side, including nasi himpit (compacted rice cubes). Do not be fooled by the small quantity of the serving; the six sticks of satay were tender and chunky – it took us time to finish the whole dish, which was certainly filling.

For Malay food lovers, you might want to try Serai@Empire’s Nasi Kerabu, a type of Malay dish served with blue coloured spiced rice (which was cooked with morning glory to give it the bluish hue), ayam percik (special marinated chicken), ulam (raw edible indigenous plants), fish crackers and budu (Malay’s spicy sauce made out of anchovy’s paste). This dish comes in generous portion, so non-big eaters may need to share. For those with big appetite like the Gaya Travel team, we confess that we quickly wolfed down the marinated chicken because it was truly tasty as it was cooked to perfectionThe last signature dish we savoured was Seafood Spaghetti Marinara, which was garnished with basil leaves and has mussel, minced squid and salmon on the side. This dish was marvellously savoury as it leaves a nice bittersweet and sour taste on our tongues.

Serai Groups outlets are not only popular for their mouth-watering dishes but also their choice of thirst quenchers. One of our favourites is the Minted Calamansi Soda, a mixture of soda, crushed mint leaves and calamansi – the fizziness of the soda was truly refreshing. Another must try beverage is Sirap Bandung, made up of fresh milk mixed with rose syrup, soda and a touch of pandan flavour – best stirred before taking a sip. Apart from that, Serai Tea is also another concoction worth trying, which is made with a hint of fresh mint, lemon sorbet on top and lemongrass tea. With such a huge array of tantalising dishes and refreshing beverages, Serai@Empire is definitely the restaurant worth checking out by Asian food lovers when being in Subang Jaya.
