Upcoming Concerts at Dewan Filharmonik PETRONAS

Dewan Filharmonik PETRONAS (DFP), located in the middle of the PETRONAS Twin Towers, Kuala Lumpur City Centre, continues to present fabulous concerts to whet the musical tastes of all music fans. November will kick off with an exciting concerts themed Charlie Chaplin at the Symphony on Friday, 4 November 2016 and Saturday, 5 November 2016 at 8.30 p.m. To be led by Grant Cooper, enjoy a music extravaganza with the screening of Chaplin’s movies with ‘live’ orchestral accompaniment by the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra (MPO), a truly uproarious evening of comedy and music. November will kick off with an exciting concerts themed Charlie Chaplin at the Symphony on Friday, 4 November 2016 and Saturday, 5 November 2016 at 8.30 p.m. To be led by Grant Cooper, enjoy a music extravaganza with the screening of Chaplin’s movies with ‘live’ orchestral accompaniment by the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra (MPO), a truly uproarious evening of comedy and music. Presenter Dan Kamin will make an appearance in these showcases.

Next up is the family-themed concerts, The Classical Clown, scheduled on Saturday, 5 November 2016 at 3.00 p.m., and Sunday, 6 November 2016 at 2.30 p.m. and 4.30 p.m. Cooper and Kamin will resume their positions as conductor and presenter respectively in these interactive showcases.

Conductor Constantin Trinks will collaborate with the MPO on Friday, 11 November 2016 and Saturday, 12 November 2016 at 8.30 p.m. Together with pianist David Fray, they will present works by Schumann and Bruckner.

Fray returns to present a recital on Sunday, 13 November 2016 at 3.00 p.m. with a dazzling set of piano works.

Conductor Guillaume Tourniaire returns to the DFP stage after his debut in February this year. Together with the MPO, he will present majestic works by Mahler (including his mystical First Symphony nicknamed Titan), in concerts featuring internationally acclaimed baritone Matthias Goerne. The showcases are scheduled on Saturday, 19 November 2016 at 8.30 p.m. and Sunday, 20 November 2016 at 3.00 p.m.

MPO Happy Hour, themed Embrujo, is scheduled on Wednesday, 23 November 2016 at 6.30 p.m. where the audience can join the MPO musicians in an informal session, letting their hair down with a repertoire of various music genres.Tourniaire returns to the podium to present a mix of wonderful repertoire such as Dukas’ La Peri and Stravinsky’s The Rite of Spring. The concerts are scheduled on Saturday, 26 November 2016 at 8.30 p.m. and Sunday, 27 November 2016 at 3.00 p.m.

The MPO opens the month of December with music from Tchaikovsky’s glorious ballet music from The Nutcracker on Friday, 2 December 2016 and Saturday, 3 December 2016 at 8.30 p.m. The concerts will be led by Russian conductor Stanislav Kochanovsky who conducted concerts for the Ballet Festival last January.

The Youth Orchestra Festival this month puts the spotlight on youth ensemble from home and abroad. It commences with a performance by Singapore National Youth Orchestra (SNYO) themed Colours of S.E.A. on Saturday, 10 December 2016 at 8.30 p.m. Leonard Tan will conduct the ensemble while the Singapore Symphony Children’s Choir will make an appearance.

Members of the SNYO and Choir will next join the Malaysian Philharmonic Youth Orchestra (MPYO) on Sunday, 11 December 2016 at 3.00 p.m. presenting classical works by Rossini, Mendez, Piazzolla and Ravel. Themed Vibrancy of Youth, the concert will be led by Julie Desbordes and will feature trumpeter Joe Burgstaller.

The final offering of the month will be the MPYO’s collaboration with the MPO in Christmas concerts themed Ho! Ho! Holiday Pops on Monday, 12 December 2016 and Tuesday, 13 December 2016 at 8.30 p.m. The two orchestras will present festive works such as Sleigh Ride, A Christmas Festival and An American In Paris, all under the direction of Desbordes.
