Batik Air Strengthens Asia Network with Launch of Kuala Lumpur–Shanghai Route
KUALA LUMPUR, 24 JUNE 2026 – Batik Air has further strengthened its presence in China with the launch of its new direct service between Kuala Lumpur and Shanghai, marking another significant milestone in the airline’s growing international network.
The inaugural flight departed Kuala Lumpur on 23 June 2026 and arrived at Shanghai Pudong International Airport at 1.20am the following morning. The return service subsequently arrived at Kuala Lumpur International Airport Terminal 1 (KLIA Terminal 1) on 24 June 2026 at 8.50am (local time).
Upon arrival in Kuala Lumpur, passengers were warmly welcomed by representatives from Batik Air and Tourism Malaysia, including Tourism Malaysia Deputy Director General (Promotion II), Mr. Samuel Lee Thai Hung; Senior Director International Promotion Division (Asia/Africa), Nuwal Fadhilah Ku Azmi and Senior Deputy Director International Promotion Division (Asia/Africa), Rahayu Ahmad.
As part of the celebration, arriving passengers were presented with specially prepared goodie bags, reflecting Malaysia’s renowned hospitality and offering a memorable first impression of the destination. The welcome was further enlivened by Tourism Malaysia’s official mascots, Wira and Manja, who greeted passengers upon arrival and showcased the warmth, friendliness, and cultural vibrancy of Malaysia.
The introduction of the Shanghai–Kuala Lumpur service comes at an opportune time as Malaysia intensifies efforts under the Visit Malaysia 2026 (VM2026) campaign. The national tourism initiative targets 43 million tourist arrivals by 2026, with China remaining one of Malaysia’s key source markets.
Chief Executive Officer of Batik Air, Datuk Chandran Rama Muthy, said the new route represents more than just enhanced air connectivity, serving as a catalyst for stronger economic, tourism and cultural exchanges between Malaysia and China.
“Shanghai is one of China’s most dynamic and influential cities, and we are delighted to welcome travellers from this important market to Malaysia. The launch of this service strengthens the longstanding relationship between Malaysia and China while creating greater opportunities for tourism, trade and investment between both nations.
“As Malaysia prepares for Visit Malaysia 2026, this route will play an important role in driving visitor arrivals and showcasing the country’s diverse tourism offerings. Beyond Kuala Lumpur, travellers can conveniently explore other destinations across Malaysia through Batik Air’s extensive domestic network, allowing them to experience the country’s rich cultural heritage, culinary diversity and natural attractions.
“We remain committed to supporting Malaysia’s tourism aspirations while providing seamless and convenient travel options for passengers travelling between China and Malaysia,” he said.
The launch of the Shanghai–Kuala Lumpur route further reinforces Batik Air’s commitment to expanding regional connectivity and strengthening Malaysia’s position as a key aviation gateway in the Asia-Pacific region.
