What’s one word to describe Tioman? Peace? Tranquillity? As soon as my feet sank into the warm,
pearly sand, my mind filled with so many thoughts. Honestly, I’m not a beach kind of girl. Growing up in a city of glass, metal, and concrete, I am used to the sounds of honking cars and the sight of crowded streets. I had made peace with the noise and the hustle, strange as it may sound.
But as I stood on the beach, a soft breeze brushed against my skin, carrying the scent of salt and sea. The rhythm of the waves gently hitting the shore was like nature’s lullaby, so different from the urban scene I knew so well. The ocean stretched endlessly, a soothing blue that met the sky at the horizon, making everything else seem small and distant.
Who knew that Tioman’s mesmerising landscape is an antidote for those who wanted to escape reality? The simplicity of the island, the beach, the sun, and the sea was something I had never truly appreciated until now.
Kampung Juara: A Hidden Paradise

Tucked away on the serene island of Tioman off Malaysia’s east coast, Kampung Juara is a hidden gem awaiting exploration. With only 200 to 300 native residents, it felt like stumbling upon a concealed paradise. The golden sands of the untouched beaches meet the crystal-clear waters of the South China Sea. This cosy village offers a peaceful escape from the hustle and bustle of city life.
It took 30 minutes from Tanjung Gemok jetty to arrive at Kampung Juara, which is filled with signs of communal verve: cosy roadside restaurants with delicious aromas wafting out, bustling mini markets filled with locals going about their business, and even a small school where children played joyfully.
Walking around, I noticed that Kampung Juara is also home to a turtle sanctuary, where visitors can visit and learn more about how important turtles are to the ocean and the different threats they face. It was both fun and educational, and I found myself even more fascinated by these incredible creatures. I learned that the staff work hard in monitoring and assisting with the turtles’ egg fertilisation process. However, this important work happens without any outsiders watching. The reason, I discovered, is to keep the turtles calm and stress-free, ensuring they don’t feel pressured by human presence.
Back in the village, I was welcomed with open arms by the friendly locals. Their warmth and hospitality made me feel right at home, as I had been a part of the community for years. I spent my days exploring the narrow lanes and hidden trails, then ended my day by hanging out at the local eateries, devouring flavours as vibrant as the surrounding scenery. It may be a small village, but its beauty and charm are boundless.
A Serene Escape: Three Days in Barat Tioman Resort
Arriving at Barat Tioman Resort (https://barattioman.com/), I felt a mix of excitement and nervousness. Coming from the city, the idea of spending three days in Kampung Juara on Tioman Island was both thrilling and daunting. The 30-minute jeep ride gave me plenty of time to wonder what awaited me at the end of the journey. As I arrived at the resort, all my wonders melted away as I saw the beautiful retreat just in front of the beach.
As I stepped into the open-concept lobby, I was greeted by comfortable seating that invited me to rest after the bumpy ride. Welcome drinks were offered to all guests, adding a touch of hospitality. The open space allowed me to take in the stunning ocean view while waiting to be checked in. The check-in process was smooth and hassle-free. The friendly staff quickly handled the formalities and then showed me to my room. The room was spacious, with enough space for two single beds. It featured a segregated shower and toilet, providing convenience and privacy. There was a safety box to store my precious belongings and a small porch outside where I could dry off after a dip in the ocean.
The resort itself was stunning, with a huge pool placed right among the rooms for easy access. It’s the perfect spot to cool off after a day at the beach. There is a lovely spa too where you can relax and pamper yourself. The environment is filled with trees, adding to the peaceful vibe. As night descended, the resort’s atmosphere turned lively. The bars opened their doors, and the sound of laughter and music filled the air. A short fire show captivated the audience, casting a warm glow over the night sky. It was a magical experience, one that would stay with me long after the night had passed.

Although I hoped to witness the famed sunrise of Tioman Island, the unpredictable weather had other plans. Nevertheless, as I gazed out at the serene beauty of the surroundings, I couldn’t help but feel grateful for the opportunity to experience such a magical moment. In that tranquil morning light, I felt a profound sense of connection to the world around me, humbled by the majesty of the natural world.
A Day of Ocean Wonders and Village Charm
My day started with a snorkelling activity. It was an experience that left me breathless in more ways than one. As I slipped into the water and began to explore the vibrant coral reefs and teeming marine life below, I marvelled at the resilience of nature. The ocean continued to thrive and in that moment, I felt a profound sense of gratitude for the chance to witness such beauty, and I vowed to do my part to protect and preserve this precious ecosystem for generations to come.
During my time at the resort, I had the opportunity to participate in a coral reef conservation project, an experience that left a lasting impact on me. Alongside other guests, I helped to create coral reef blocks that were made from glass bottles that were crushed and then mixed with sand to produce an alternative concrete mix. Recycled glass bottles were then arranged on the wet mixture that turned into mould, then left to harden for about three days. After the blocks were dry enough, the divers later would plant the blocks underwater to support the growth of new corals. Learning about the importance of coral reefs and witnessing firsthand the efforts to preserve them was a truly eye-opening experience.
Unfortunately, spending extended periods in the ocean water left my skin feeling irritated and sensitive. Thankfully, Watsons Malaysia’s recently launched all-new Naturals by Watsons Algae range came to the rescue, soothed my skin and restored its natural balance. The product’s 24-hour intensive hydration made my skin feeling soft and supple all day! With my skin feeling refreshed and rejuvenated, I was able to dive back into the water without hesitation, ready to continue exploring the wonders of the underwater world.

After my exhilarating snorkelling adventure, I decided to explore the village of Kampung Juara on a rented motorcycle. Winding through narrow streets and picturesque landscapes, I couldn’t help but marvel at the beauty of the destination. Making small talk with the friendly locals, I discovered hidden gems and charming spots tucked away in every corner.
