ITE HCMC 2024: A Gateway to Vietnam’s Booming Tourism Industry

I recently had the honour of being invited to the opening ceremony of the International Travel Expo Ho Chi Minh City (ITE HCMC) 2024, one of Vietnam’s most prestigious travel events. Held annually, this year’s expo was bigger and more impactful, bringing together key players from the tourism industry to exchange ideas, forge partnerships, and showcase Vietnam as a world-class destination.

The theme for ITE HCMC 2024 was “Sustainable Travel, Creating Future”, which focused on a crucial conversation in today’s tourism industry: the need to balance tourism growth with environmental sustainability. In response to the increasing awareness of climate change and the environmental impact of travel, the expo highlighted green initiatives, responsible tourism practices, and innovative solutions aimed at minimising the industry’s carbon footprint.

The theme underscored the collective responsibility of industry players to ensure that the tourism industry not only offers economic prosperity, but also contributes to protecting the natural and cultural heritages for future generations. Through various activities, ITE HCMC 2024 addressed how the tourism sector can adapt to new challenges while building a sustainable future.

ITE HCMC 2024 was an exciting event filled with opportunities for networking, learning, and exploring new trends in the travel industry. Here are some highlights:

Vietnam’s Tourism Boom: On the Road to Recovery

Following the global pandemic, the tourism industry is undergoing a robust recovery. According to the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), international tourism is almost back to pre-pandemic levels, with Asia-Pacific reaching 82% of 2019 visitor numbers. In Vietnam alone, nearly 10 million international visitors arrived in the first seven months of 2024, a 51% increase compared to the previous year.

With growing interest in sustainable tourism, Vietnam is leading the charge. According to Booking.com’s 2023 Sustainable Travel Report, 97% of Vietnamese tourists expressed a desire to travel sustainably in the next year, a trend that resonates with global efforts to reduce carbon emissions and protect natural and cultural environments.
