The 9th Tourism Promotion Organisations for Asia Pacific Cities (TPO) General Assembly was held in Paradise Hotel Busan, Korea, from 25-28 September, 2019. This year’s theme was “Common Prosperity in Tourism through Open Partnership.”
The Asia-Pacific Cities Tourism Promotion Organization (TPO) is an international organization created for the promotion of tourism in Asia-Pacific cities.More than 700 people including mayors, tourism officials, academicians, arts and cultural promoters from 85 cities in 15 countries attended. Among them were Port Villa in Vanuatu, Dubai, Nepal, Indonesia, Japan, South Korea, China, Vietnam, Philippines, Thailand, Mongolia, Uzbekistan, Japan, Russia, and Timor Leste. From Malaysia, representatives from the cities of Ipoh, Kuala Kangsar, Taiping, Alor Star and Kota Bahru joined the event.
In session one of the assembly, keynote speaker Mr Rolando Canizal of Executive Director of Tourism Knowledge Centre (TKC) Rajah Travel Corporation of Philippones spoke on Open Partnership: Building Destinations, Promoting Growth., while Dato’ Mohmed Razip Hasan, Deputy Director General (Promotion) of Tourism Malaysia, delivered a keynote speech on “Destination Branding & Promotion through Smart Partnership’ and then as panelist of discussion together with Mr. Zulqarnain Mohamed Mayor of Kuala Kangsar Municipal Council, Mr Ashok Kumar, Mayor of Dhulikhel Municipal City Nepal and Dr. Yoon, Tae Hwan, Prof. of Dong-Eui University Busan.
In this General Assembly, Taiping was announced for the Best of Public Relations Campaign 2019 and Kota Bahru as The Best Destination Manager 2019. The awards were presented by Mayor of Busan to Mr. Borhan Abdul Halim, Mayor of Taiping Municipal Council who was also elected as Co-President of TPO for 2020-2021 and to Mr. Azman Mohd Daham, Director of Public Affairs and Information of Kota Bharu Municipal Council. In their speeches, they took the opportunity to promote and campaign for Visit Malaysia 2020. Alongside with the General Assembly, member cities including from Malaysia and Tourism Malaysia Seoul office also took part in TPO Tourism Roadshow in Haeudae Square, Busan as well as TPO Traditional Art Festival in BEXCO which was presented by City of Ipoh.
