As someone new to electric vehicle (EV) road trips, I initially had concerns. Sure, EVs sound exciting but can they really go the distance? Are there enough charging stations along the way to keep the journey smooth?
Imagine setting out on the open road, leaving behind the fumes and noise of petrol cars, and instead experiencing a peaceful, eco-friendly journey. I had the opportunity to do so firsthand when I recently joined an all female media drive to Kota Bharu and Kuala Terengganu, organised by the Malaysian Zero Emission Vehicle Association (MyZEVA), which is on a mission to promote electrical vehicle (EV) adoption in Malaysia, aiming for a cleaner, greener future with zero-emission vehicles. Through MyZEVA’s efforts, more Malaysians are exploring how EVs are redefining long-distance travel.
Throughout the trip, I had the chance to test drive four remarkable EVs: the Neta X, BMW iX, Smart #1, and Hyundai Ioniq 6. Each vehicle possesses unique strengths, from performance to comfort, further proving that EVs are more than ready for extended journeys. Whether it was the sleek design of the BMW iX or the innovative tech of the Hyundai Ioniq 6, each EV showcased the possibilities of zero-emission travel, making every mile memorable.
Why Choose an EV for a Long Road Trip?
EVs offer several unique benefits for travellers that go beyond simply avoiding petrol stops. The absence of a combustion engine means there’s no engine noise, allowing you to immerse yourself in the natural sounds of the journey, perfect for cruising along scenic routes, like those between Kuala Lumpur and Kota Bharu. EVs also rely on high-capacity batteries, which translates to fewer mechanical issues. This aspect alone can make an EV trip more relaxing; the peace of mind that comes from knowing you’re less likely to experience breakdowns on the road is invaluable.
And while it is true that EVs can initially stretch the budget a bit more than conventional cars, the long-term savings can be substantial considering EV charging costs are significantly lower than fuel prices. For example, charging rates are as low as RM1.19 per KwH, making each kilometre cheaper to drive, letting you travel further for less. EVs are also easier on maintenance due to fewer moving parts, which means fewer unexpected repair costs or last minute breakdowns.
No More Petrol Stops: Charging on Malaysia’s Expanding Network
On a trip from Kuala Lumpur to Kota Bharu, for example, you can plan stops at strategically placed charging stations, like Gentari’s DC fast chargers at the Pahang Technology Park, where, you can take a break, grab a snack, and stretch while your car powers up. These hubs are turning simple stops into part of the experience, letting you relax and explore nearby attractions.
On the same note, TNB Electron has set up charging stations at Petron Selising – located along the road between Kuala Terengganu and Kota Bharu – equipped with a small café nearby and well-maintained facilities, providing the perfect place to recharge both yourself and your car. The setup at Petron Selising allows you to relax and enjoy the break, making it an ideal spot to refresh during longer trips.
Charging breaks turn out to be ideal for leisurely pit stops. While you might rush through petrol refuelling, EV charging allows you to explore nearby areas, from charming cafes to scenic lookouts. For instance, at ChargeSini’s 60kW DC station in Mydin Kuala Terengganu, you can check out local shops, grab a bite at nearby eateries, or take a short stroll through the city centre while your car powers up.
Redefining the Environmental Impact of Road Trips
The sustainability aspect of driving an EV is perhaps its most fulfilling benefit. Each kilometre you travel in an EV helps reduce greenhouse future. According to studies, EVs emit far fewer pollutants than traditional fuel-powered cars, making them ideal for those who want to reduce their carbon footprint while exploring Malaysia’s beautiful landscapes. Driving through the East Coast in an EV felt meaningful, knowing that the natural beauty around me was left largely unaffected by emissions.
The media drive reinforced how EVs let EV drivers connect with Malaysia’s natural beauty while actively participating in the preservation of these landscapes. Whether it’s the lush hills, serene coastlines, or the vibrant towns along the way, every kilometre covered felt purposeful.
My All-Female Media Drive Experience
Taking part in this all-female media drive was about more than just testing out EVs: it was a chance to experience how EVs are transforming travel culture in Malaysia. MyZEVA’s mission is to bring EVs to the forefront, emphasising that EV travel isn’t just a trend but a sustainable way forward. Sharing this journey with a group of inspiring women made the adventure even more meaningful. As we drove from Kuala Lumpur up to Kota Bharu, then down to Kuala Terengganu, it is evident that the EV infrastructure in Malaysia is not only functional but designed to support travel aspirations for people across the country.
For anyone considering an EV road trip in Malaysia, now is the time to explore this new way of travel. With more charging stations, lower costs per kilometre, and a significantly reduced environmental impact, EVs are making it possible to experience Malaysia in a way that leaves less behind. Embracing EV travel means embracing innovation, sustainability, and a new form of adventure. Whether you’re driving solo or with friends, every charge, every mile, and every scenic route taken feels like a step toward a greener, more connected future.
