Testing the Honda CR-V e:HEV RS at Janda Baik: The Road Trip Companion You Didn’t Know You Needed

Practical, comfortable, and packed with innovative features, the 2024 CR-V e:HEV RS makes for an ideal road companion.

Practical, comfortable, and packed with innovative features, the 2024 CR-V e:HEV RS makes for an ideal road companion.

There are road trips that bring you on smooth roads and highways, and then there are those that lead you on winding treks that demand your vehicle’s finesse and fortitude. This, my friends, is where the 2024 Honda CR-V e:HEV RS comes in as the perfect road trip companion, ideal for tackling the scenic but winding journey from Kuala Lumpur to Janda Baik. With steep inclines, sharp descents, and beautiful views at every bend, I need a car that’s not just pretty to the eyes but practical to the core. And this hybrid SUV ticks every box and then some.

There’s a lot to love about the CR-V e:HEV RS, but one of its standout features for any hilly adventure has to be the Hill Descent Control (HDC). If you’ve ever driven on Karak highway, you’ll know it’s a mesmerising yet challenging route, with enough bends to make a driver anxious. The CR-V handles each twist and turn with surprising agility, maintaining steady control with barely a hint of body roll, and at times makes me forget that I am driving a large vehicle.

Safety, of course, isn’t something Honda takes lightly. The CR-V e:HEV RS comes packed with the Honda Sensing ADAS system, which bundles nine advanced features designed to keep you out of trouble, including Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC), Lane Keep Assist System (LKAS), Collision Mitigation Braking System (CMBS), and more. The Low-Speed Follow (LSF) is particularly useful in slow-moving traffic, while Lead Car Departure Notification (LCDN) is a godsend for those of us prone to a bit of daydreaming during red light.

Moving into the interior, the CR-V e:HEV RS makes a fantastic first impression. I couldn’t help but fall for the aluminium-finish honeycomb patterns across the dashboard. And call me old school, but I really do feel that the physical buttons and knobs on the infotainment display and the air-conditioning controls make the overall look appears way sexier…

The car’s 9-inch Advanced Display Audio system with wireless Apple CarPlay™ and Android Auto™ connectivity, paired with a 12-speaker Bose Premium audio system, has transformed my road trip singalongs into a true concert experience. Plus, there’s a good mix of USB ports for your charging needs: two USB Type-C ports in the back, one in the front, and even a Qi wireless charging pad. This allows passengers keep their devices juiced up and ready throughout the journey.

The car also boasts a spacious cabin with nicely padded seats that position you comfortably behind the wheel. One of my complaints with SUVs has often been the challenge of finding that sweet driving ergonomic position. But, at 5’2″, I’m pleased to report the CR-V e:HEV RS provides a 12-way power-adjustable driver’s seat with height adjustments and a tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel that makes everything within reach. On top of this, Honda has skipped the third row in favour of generous legroom in the back. A brilliant feature of these rear seats is that they are slideable, making it a breeze to load up bulkier items, including passengers ranging from children to the elderly.

Speaking of storage, the CR-V e:HEV RS offers an impressive 589 litres of boot space, enough for six carry-on bags (yes, I’ve tested this) or even a weekend’s worth of camping gear. And if you were to require bigger room, simply fold down the rear seats to reveal a staggering 1,072 litres of space that is perfect for bikes, larger items, and those “just-in-case” bags we all tend to pack.

Honda Connect system

Another brilliant perk is the Honda Connect system, which lets you monitor and control your car via smartphone. I find this truly handy, knowing it can call for help during collisions, and even start the engine remotely, all from your mobile. And in Malaysia’s heat, nothing beats pre-cooling your car for that pleasant driving experience.

Honda CR-V e:HEV RS

Honestly, being a female, I do find the HR-V RS chicer and more beautiful; however, this is not to say that the CR-V e:HEV RS wouldn’t turn heads. Mind you, even bulky American-style SUV builds and 18-inch Berlina Black alloys are capable in winning many hearts, especially those with family. Oh well, taste is subjective, isn’t it?

A Relaxing Stay at Tiarasa Escapes

After a scenic drive to Janda Baik, there’s no better place to unwind than Tiarasa Escapes Glamping Resort. Just 45 minutes from KL, this glamping resort has a lush vibe with 20 safari-style tents and five dreamy treehouses. With rustic, boho-chic interiors, it is an idyllic escape perfect for those who fancy a bonfire night with toasted marshmallows and a good bit of moonlight movie screenings. And for little ones, there’s a wading pool to splash in, not to mention a picturesque stream nearby for that perfect cooling dip.

Fuel Up at Tentent Café & BBQ

A pit stop at Tentent Café & BBQ in Genting Sempah was just the treat I needed. With an open-air layout and views of misty mountainscapes, it’s as cosy as it is scenic, especially close to sunset. The TENTENT Special BBQ Platter (MYR50) is a meat lover’s delight, featuring chicken, beef, and lamb with a spread of sauces. As the night chill begins, go for the steamboat (MYR25), complete with refillable soups like mala, tom yam, and mushroom. Add in free-flowing desserts and ample parking, and you’ve got a foodie’s paradise just 15 minutes from Genting Highlands.

Adrenaline Fix at FJ ATV, Janda Baik

FJ ATV, Janda Baik

For those craving a dash of adventure, FJ ATV Janda Baik offers Malaysia’s largest all-terrain vehicle (ATV) park, with trails to suit all levels. I opted for the Fun Trail, which traverses offroad obstacles, muddy tracks, and a peek around a resort. The 450cc ATV was surprisingly stable despite its huge size, and the thrill of skidding through off-road trails is reason enough to return for the more daring Escape Trail.

In conclusion, I deduce that Honda CR-V e:HEV RS is the kind of SUV that doesn’t try to be flashy or overly complicated. It’s simply a practical, powerful vehicle that does what it’s supposed to: comfortable and reliable driving. If you were looking for a dependable travel companion that’s ready for family outings, road trips, and the daily grind, this car is a fantastic choice!
