On 26 January 2016, Malaysia’s east coast state Terengganu unveiled Beautiful Terengganu during a pre-launch event at the Ritz-Carlton Kuala Lumpur as part of its product strategy in gearing up the state towards Visit Terengganu Year 2017 (VTY 2017).
Revealing the wonders of Terengganu and driven by the tagline ‘There’s More to Terengganu Than What You Know’, the Menteri Besar (Chief Minister) of Terengganu YAB Dato’ Seri Haji Ahmad Razif Abdul Rahman said that Terengganu will step up its marketing activities to attract various target segments in boosting the average tourist spend and duration of tourists’ stay in the state. Targeting 6.5 million tourist arrivals over the next five years, Dato’ Razif said the state is confident in reaching the target.
“Malaysia remains a preferred destination and one of the most attractive regional attractions for travellers. There is much opportunity for Terengganu to capitalise on this and we will certainly enhance our offerings and all related infrastructure support to attract tourists to explore our beautiful state and enjoy the best of what Terengganu has to offer. From our many scenic islands and pristine beaches, to our rich cultural history and delightful cuisine, we have so many hidden treasures in Terengganu yet to be discovered,” Dato’ Razif mentioned in his speech.
Terengganu state government recognises tourism as a key economic thrust and has embarked on an intensive programme to develop and encourage tourism in Terengganu. VTY 2017 will become a platform to showcase the state’s many cultural, historical and natural facets.
In 2015, the state welcomed close to 5 million visitors, 16 per cent of whom were foreigners. The VTY 2017 campaign includes strategy to reach out to new niche markets outside traditional targets, especially travellers who have higher spending power and prefer to stay longer in a single destination.
At present, Terengganu has over 300 hotels and homestays, catering to various categories of travellers. Terengganu also offers economic opportunities and welcomes investments in support of the tourism industry.
“Terengganu is unique because we can offer travellers from within and beyond Malaysia. We have a good variety of attractions in terms of cultural legacies, history, food and great outdoors. VTY 2017 in particular and tourism in general is part of our strategic transformation plans to diversify income generation. As we approach 2020, it is our goal to propel Terengganu’s tourism sector to be a top contributor to our GDP,” added Dato’ Razif.
