Experiencing Piano Land Cruise, Malaysia’s Muslim-Friendly Luxury
I experienced the Piano Land Cruise, operated by Astro Ocean Cruise and chartered by Hwajing Travel & Tours, as one of the latest additions to Malaysia’s cruise offerings. By late 2025, the ship had already positioned itself as a Muslim-friendly luxury cruise homeporting at Port Klang. Designed with the Malaysian market in mind, Piano Land delivers a cruising experience centred on Halal-certified services, international retail and diverse onboard entertainment, effectively functioning as a floating resort.
Before You Sail: Preparation and Booking

Although it was a domestic itinerary within Malaysia, I found that careful planning was still required. Passengers are generally expected to carry either a passport with at least six months’ validity or a valid MyKad. Non-Malaysians must present a valid work permit, student visa, or MM2H status to access promotional fares.
Three-day, two-night packages are typically priced between RM699 and RM1,098 for an inside cabin, excluding port taxes and fees of about RM420 and gratuities of approximately USD16 per night.
What stood out immediately was the cruise’s strong Muslim-friendly positioning, with 100% Halal-certified dining across main venues and dedicated prayer rooms complete with Qibla directions. Based on my experience, bringing a small power extension lead is advisable due to limited cabin outlets, along with swimwear, comfortable walking shoes for Penang and smart-casual attire for evening performances.
During the Experience: The 3D2N Itinerary

The three-day, two-night itinerary balances onboard leisure with time ashore. On the first day, I arrived at the Port Klang Cruise Terminal between noon and 2 p.m., which helped avoid long queues during check-in.
After boarding, I headed straight to the Lido Café for lunch before attending the mandatory muster drill ahead of the ship’s 4 p.m. departure. The evening programme offered a choice of live music at the Piano Land Lounge or stage performances at the Grand Theatre.
On Day 2, the ship docked at Swettenham Pier in George Town at around 9 a.m., allowing easy access to Penang’s attractions, including street art areas and Chew Jetty, which are within walking distance, while guided excursions to Penang Hill and Kek Lok Si Temple were also available. Passengers were required to return by 6 p.m. for the return voyage.
Day 3 was more relaxed, with a final breakfast onboard, time for last-minute duty-free shopping or a visit to the library, and arrival back at Port Klang at approximately 9 a.m. for disembarkation.
After the Cruise: Final Checklist
Before leaving the ship, I ensured that all onboard credits and additional charges, including spa treatments, speciality beverages and gratuities, were fully settled either at the reception desk or via the mobile app. As my booking was made through a travel agency, I was also encouraged to share feedback, particularly on the quality of Halal catering and overall service standards, which are used to enhance future sailings.
Duty-Free Shopping: China Duty Free (CDF)
One of the most prominent features onboard is the duty-free shopping area operated by China Duty Free Group, covering 650 square metres across Decks 6 and 7. During my visit, I found a comprehensive range of international luxury brands spanning cosmetics, fragrances, jewellery, sunglasses, leather goods and premium spirits.
The presence of exclusive “Gulangyu” co-branded collections, created specifically for the ship under its former name, added to the sense of exclusivity. The design of the retail space, which blends maritime elements with Shanghai-inspired aesthetics, gives it a boutique feel rather than that of a standard duty-free store.
Dining: Halal Excellence at Lido Café

Dining was one of the cruise’s strongest aspects, particularly for Muslim travellers. All main dining venues onboard offer 100% Halal-certified food. I frequently returned to the Lido Café, located on the upper decks and offering panoramic ocean views, where meals are served throughout the day from breakfast to supper.
A clear highlight was the Halal Hong Kong-style roasted duck, a dish rarely found on cruise ships.
For a more refined setting, the Byland and East restaurants provide table service with a selection of Asian and Western Halal menus. Beverage offerings reinforce the ship’s Muslim-friendly positioning, with a wide variety of creative mocktails and non-alcoholic drinks available at the Splash Bar and Star Club.

Entertainment and Shows

Entertainment onboard is lively and designed to appeal to multiple generations. I attended several performances at the 650-seat Theatre Royal, which hosts nightly Broadway-style shows, magic acts and cultural dance performances, typically scheduled at around 8:30 p.m. and 10:30 p.m.
Live music features prominently at the Piano Land Lounge and Zenith Lounge, where piano recitals and band performances are held regularly, while karaoke sessions offer a more interactive option. The ship also includes Chaplin’s Cinema, a dedicated space for screening international films and hosting occasional guest lectures.
Relaxation: Oasis Spa and Pool Deck

For relaxation, I made use of the Oasis Spa and Salon, which offers a full range of treatments including massages, facials and Traditional Chinese Medicine therapies such as acupuncture. Checking the Daily Program delivered to my cabin proved worthwhile, as embarkation-day specials and port-day discounts often reduced spa prices by 20 to 30 per cent.
The ship’s Crystal Pool and Terrace Pool, along with four outdoor jacuzzis, provide ample space for leisure, while the pool deck frequently hosts activities such as Zumba, aerobics and interactive mini telematch games led by cruise staff. When seeking a quieter moment, the observation decks at sunset offered particularly scenic views of the Straits of Melaka.
Pro Tip for Malaysian Sailors
From my experience, reviewing the Daily Program immediately after boarding is essential, as it lists the precise timings for duty-free flash sales and spa happy hours, which are generally not advertised online.
