MV Piano Land Makes a Grand Homeport Debut in Port Klang, Ushering in a New Era of Muslim-Friendly Cruise Tourism for Malaysia

Malaysia’s maritime tourism landscape reached a significant milestone with the grand arrival and launch of the magnificent cruise ship MV Piano Land at Port Klang on 1 December 2025. It marked a defining moment for cruise travel in the country. The welcoming atmosphere nothing short of impressive — a harmonious blend of cultural performances, ceremonial traditions, and warm Malaysian hospitality that highlighted the country as a regional cruise hub, a proper celebration. As the ship graced into port, it was greeted by an enthusiastic welcome team, featuring traditional performances that echoed Malaysia’s multicultural soul while adding a sense of occasion befitting a vessel that represents both heritage and progress in modern cruising, all courtesy of Tourism Malaysia.

This arrival was not merely a port call, but the official commencement of MV Piano Land’s homeport operations in Malaysia, one that many in the industry had been waiting for. It was a strategic collaboration led by Hwajing Travel & Tours (Hwajing) together with Tourism Malaysia, Malaysian port authorities, and key industry players. Docking proudly at Port Klang, the ship embarked on a new chapter that includes Malaysia as a gateway for cruise tourism in Southeast Asia, offering travellers an accessible and culturally curated cruising experience.

Upon arrival, VIP guests and media representatives were invited aboard for an exclusive guided tour of the ship, giving a first-hand look at MV Piano Land’s thoughtfully curated facilities, elegant staterooms, dining venues as well as entertainment spaces. The atmosphere was festive yet formal, highlighted by a flag-raising ceremony that symbolised international friendship and partnership. The Malaysian flag was raised alongside the Hwajing flag, proudly fluttering against the skyline of Port Klang. The moment captured the spirit of collaboration and mutual respect between the Malaysian maritime tourism industry and its international cruise partners.

One of the most meaningful highlights of the event was the Plaque Exchange Ceremony. A revered maritime tradition to commemorate a ship’s inaugural homeport call, this ceremony was conducted with pride and significance, reinforcing the importance of MV Piano Land’s presence in Malaysia and its cruise industry.

The distinguished list of VIP attendees reflected the magnitude of the occasion. Among those present were YBrs. Mr. Lee Thai Hung, Deputy Director General of Tourism Malaysia; YBrs. Ms. Chua Yee Ling, Chief Executive Officer of Tourism Selangor; YBrs. Mr. Kenny Cheong Ken Lee, Managing Director of Hwajing Travel & Tours; YBrs. Mr. Ean Yong Hian Wah, Chairman of the Port Klang Authority; YBhg. Dato’ Azman Shah Mohd Yusof, Chairman of Port Klang Cruise Terminal (PKCT); YBrs. During the ceremony, Dato’ Azman Shah Mohd Yusof, Chairman of PKCT, exchanged plaques with Captain Hou Rubo of MV Piano Land, followed by a second exchange between Mr. Ean Yong Hian Wah, Chairman of Port Klang Authority, and Captain Hou Rubo. These symbolic gestures represented a warm welcome to the vessel and cemented the spirit of cooperation between Malaysia and its cruise tourism partners. As Dato’ Azman Shah noted, the decision to homeport in Malaysia reflects a deep, long-term partnership that aligns with the nation’s ambition to become ASEAN’s leading cruise tourism gateway.

A Cruise Ship with Heritage, Elegance, and Asian Warmth

The story of MV Piano Land is one of transformation and cultural fusion. Originally a European classic cruise ship once named by Queen Elizabeth II, this 70,000-ton luxury vessel has undergone a remarkable rebirth under China’s cruise development. Its evolution reflects the proud country’s independent breakthroughs in the cruise industry, combining British elegance and ceremonial sophistication with Asian hospitality and service sensibilities.

Today, MV Piano Land stands as a floating embodiment of international quality infused with regional warmth. A full charter cruise, MV Piano Land caters seamlessly to Asian travellers while retaining the grandeur and refinement of European cruising traditions. It doesn’t just transport passengers; it immerses them in a refined and culturally unique maritime holiday experience from the moment they step on board.

Between 29 November and 25 December 2025, MV Piano Land will carry more than 1,760 passengers per sailing, operating 11 cruises from Port Klang to Penang and Langkawi. By establishing Port Klang as its homeport, the ship eliminates the need for international flights, making cruising more accessible and convenient for Malaysians and regional travellers alike.

One’s holiday experiences aboard the MV Piano Land unfolds like a well-composed symphony starting from your first steps on the ship. The ship offers a wide range of onboard activities and performances designed to appeal to travellers of all ages and interests. From lavish theatre productions featuring professional performers, live music showcases, and cultural dance performances to interactive game shows and family-friendly entertainment, there is never a dull moment at sea.

Guests can spend their days participating in enrichment activities such as workshops, wellness sessions, fitness classes, and leisurely pursuits by the pool. Evenings come alive with spectacular stage shows, cinematic performances, and themed entertainment that rival land-based productions. For families, dedicated spaces and programmes ensure that children and teenagers are engaged, while adults enjoy moments of relaxation or vibrant nightlife experiences. MV Piano Land succeeds in striking a balance between excitement and serenity – an essential hallmark of a well-designed cruise holiday.

A Culinary Experience with Absolute Peace of Mind for Muslim Travellers

Perhaps one of MV Piano Land’s most defining features – and a true game-changer for the Malaysian market – is its Muslim-friendly and halal-certified culinary operation. In a Muslim-majority country like Malaysia, this assurance is not just an added convenience, but a crucial consideration for travellers seeking comfort and compliance with religious requirements.

All kitchen spaces, equipment and food preparation areas on board have undergone sertu (ritual cleansing) and are fully halal-certified, ensuring strict adherence to Islamic dietary laws. This meticulous attention to detail allows Muslim travellers to enjoy every meal with complete peace of mind, free from doubt or compromise.

The dining experience itself is diverse and indulgent. Guests can savour a wide array of flavours, regional Asian favourites, and international cuisines – all prepared according to halal standards without sacrificing taste or presentation. From hearty buffet spreads to refined sit-down meals, the culinary journey on MV Piano Land proves that halal dining can be authentic and luxurious while being accessible. Combined with convenient prayer facilities and family-oriented programming, the ship offers an inclusive environment where faith, comfort, and leisure coexist seamlessly.

After a day filled with activities and exploration, retreating to one’s cabin aboard MV Piano Land feels like returning to a sanctuary at sea. The rooms are thoughtfully designed, offering comfort, space, and tranquillity that elevate the cruising experience. The beds, in particular, deserve special mention – plush, supportive, and undeniably indulgent.

There is something uniquely soothing about sleeping on a cruise ship. As the vessel gently glides across the water, the subtle rhythm of the waves creates a natural lullaby, rocking guests into a deep, restful sleep. Many travellers describe the sensation as being cradled by the ocean itself, a rare and calming experience that transforms rest into a highlight of the journey.

Six Hours in Penang: A Perfectly Planned Island Adventure

Rows of vividly painted shophouses line the streets of George Town, offering a lively glimpse into Penang’s layered heritage during a short stopover from Port Klang.

One of the key highlights of the three-day, two-night cruise itinerary is the stop at Penang. There, travellers have approximately six hours to explore – more than enough time for a well-planned adventure. Begin the day with a visit to Penang Hill, ascending above the city to enjoy sweeping views and cooler air. From there, descend into the heart of George Town for a feast of sumptuous local delicacies – nasi kandar, char kway teow, cendol and more.

A leisurely walk through George Town’s UNESCO listed heritage streets offer glimpses of Malaysia’s rich history via colonial architecture, vibrant street art, and popular centuries-old temples. The key, of course, is time management – explore with purpose and eat with enthusiasm, all while always keeping an eye on the clock. After all, you wouldn’t want to be that traveller waving dramatically from the pier as the cruise sails home without you. A little planning goes a long way and the reward is a balanced and memorable appetizer to the charms of Penang in just half a day.

A Boost for Visit Malaysia Year 2026 and the Future of Cruise Tourism

The homeport operation of MV Piano Land is more than a single success story, it is a strategic catalyst for Malaysia’s tourism ambitions. As the nation prepares for Visit Malaysia Year 2026, cruise tourism brings high-value travellers, stimulating local economies by creating employment opportunities as well as strengthening Malaysia’s visibility as a world-class destination.

As Mr. Kenny Cheong, Managing Director of Hwajing Travel & Tours aptly noted, the arrival of MV Piano Land reaffirms a commitment to making cruise holidays accessible, enriching and achievable for travellers across Malaysia and Southeast Asia. This initiative aligns seamlessly with Tourism Malaysia’s vision to diversify tourism offerings and elevate the country’s standing in the global cruise industry.

Cruising for All: A Holiday Without Barriers

In many ways, MV Piano Land symbolises a shift in perception. Cruising is no longer a distant, exclusive luxury reserved for the select few. With Malaysia as MV Piano Land homeport operations, Muslim-friendly facilities, family-oriented programming and flexible itineraries, cruising has become an attainable holiday option for all age groups and all walks of life.

As Malaysia opens its arms to this new era of maritime travel, MV Piano Land stands proudly at the forefront — a floating bridge between cultures, destinations, and dreams. And as the ship sails from Port Klang into the horizon, it carries with it not just passengers, but also the promise of a brighter, more inclusive future for Malaysian tourism and beyond.
