Inside Studio City Macau: My Stay in the Heart of Cotai

Macau’s Cotai Strip is known for its spectacular integrated resorts, where grand architecture, luxury shopping and entertainment compete for attention. During my trip to Macau with AirAsia, I had the privilege of staying at Studio City Macau, a resort that takes a distinctly cinematic approach to luxury hospitality.

Conceived by Melco Resorts & Entertainment, the multi-billion-dollar resort pays homage to Golden Age Hollywood and Art Deco retro-futurism. Its most recognisable landmark is the Golden Reel, a steampunk-inspired figure-eight Ferris wheel suspended 130 metres between twin skyscraper towers. Even from the outside, the striking structure makes an immediate impression.

What sets Studio City apart is its entertainment-focused concept. Beyond its gaming facilities, the resort brings together distinctive accommodation, family attractions, shopping and dining, creating a destination that caters to more than just high-roller gaming. During my stay, I had the opportunity to experience its accommodation, enjoy breakfast and discover Stardust, giving me a glimpse of what makes this property stand out along the Cotai Strip.

Checking In: My Stay in the Celebrity Tower

My Celebrity Premium Vista Room at Studio City Macau featured a comfortable king bed, warm lighting and cinematic film-reel décor inspired by Hollywood.

Studio City offers several accommodation concepts, including the ultra-luxury Epic Tower, the all-suite Star Tower and W Macau, each with its own design identity. For my stay, I was accommodated in the Celebrity Tower, the resort’s cinematic centrepiece that reflects its Hollywood-inspired aesthetic.

Making my way to the 36th floor, I left behind the activity of the gaming tables and retail concourses for the quieter, carpeted corridors leading to my room. My accommodation was a Celebrity Premium Vista Room spanning 42 square meters (452 sq ft).

The first thing that stood out was the room’s sense of space. Rather than feeling confined, the interior offered a comfortable layout complemented by clean geometric lines, warm neutral colours and brushed bronze accents. The modern Hollywood Art Deco influence was evident without making the space feel overly theatrical.

At the centre of the room was a plush king bed dressed in 300-thread-count linens and a lofty down duvet. A pillow menu was also available, adding to the comfort of the sleeping arrangements. Integrated charging hubs and digital docking stations beside the headboard made it convenient to keep my devices charged without dealing with a tangle of cables.

Opposite the bed, a 55-inch flat-screen HDTV sat above a streamlined executive desk equipped with international sockets. The setup would be useful for travellers who need to catch up on work while away, as well as those who prefer relaxing with their favourite shows after a day of exploring Macau.

A dedicated coffee and tea station, together with a personal mini-fridge, completed the in-room refreshment facilities. These thoughtful additions made the room practical for a short city stay, whether I wanted a quick drink before heading out or some downtime between activities.

The en-suite bathroom continued the room’s understated luxury, featuring polished marble, warm vanity lighting and a glass-enclosed walk-in shower fitted with a high-pressure rainfall showerhead. Plush bath sheets and bespoke bath amenities rounded off the experience.

However, the highlight of my room was undoubtedly the floor-to-ceiling glass windows. From the 36th floor, Cotai unfolded like a cinematic backdrop, with neighbouring resort towers forming an impressive part of the skyline. As evening approached and the surrounding buildings lit up with colourful neon displays, the view became even more captivating. Drawing back the sheer curtains transformed the bedroom into a private viewing point overlooking Macau’s vibrant resort district.

For me, this was one of the room’s strongest features. It was not just about having a comfortable place to rest; it was also about enjoying a different perspective of Macau from above.

Beyond the Room: Entertainment at Studio City

Studio City is designed to be more than a place to sleep, with attractions that make the resort a destination in its own right. Although my experience focused on my stay and the facilities I had the opportunity to enjoy, the wider entertainment offering adds another dimension to what visitors can discover here.

The resort’s signature attraction is the Golden Reel, a 130-metre-high figure-eight Ferris wheel suspended between its central towers. Boarding takes place on the 23rd floor, where 17 steampunk-inspired glass cabins take riders on a gentle 15-minute journey. The ride offers panoramic views across Cotai and the South China Sea, making it one of the resort’s most distinctive attractions.

Studio City Water Park combines indoor water slides, a tropical lagoon and rocky landscapes for an all-weather aquatic adventure in Macau.

For families and visitors who enjoy water-based activities, the Studio City Water Park features an open-air tropical lagoon and lazy river, alongside an indoor heated water park maintained at approximately 30°C throughout the year. High-speed water coasters, vertical-drop slides and an indoor surfing simulator provide options for different levels of adventure.

Younger visitors can also explore Super Fun Zone, a four-level, nearly 30,000-square-foot interactive playground featuring different play zones, motion simulators and rotating character installations.

For live entertainment, the Studio City Event Center (SCEC) is a 5,000-seat multi-purpose arena that hosts major Asian pop residencies, international music tours and sporting events. Meanwhile, Studio City Cinema offers a dedicated Dolby Cinema experience, combining Dolby Vision projection with Dolby Atmos spatial audio.

These attractions demonstrate how Studio City has positioned itself as an entertainment-led resort, with activities extending well beyond its accommodation and gaming facilities.

A Journey Beyond Reality at Stardust Terminal

A digital robot ambassador appears on a screen inside the futuristic Stardust Terminal attraction at Studio City Macau.
My first experience at Stardust Terminal began with a friendly digital ambassador preparing us for an immersive, futuristic adventure at Studio City Macau.

One of the highlights of my stay at Studio City Macau was getting to experience Stardust Terminal, a retro-futuristic flying theatre that takes guests on a cinematic adventure beyond the ordinary. Designed like a spaceport, the attraction blends the glamour of mid-20th-century aviation with the excitement of deep-space exploration.

As someone who had never tried this type of motion-simulator experience before, I wasn’t entirely sure what to expect. The adventure began in the terminal, where a digital ambassador welcomed us before we boarded the simulator. Once the ride started, I was taken on a thrilling journey through deep space and prehistoric landscapes populated by dinosaurs.

What made the experience particularly memorable was how immersive it felt. The multi-axis motion seats moved in sync with the on-screen action, while high-definition projections, surround sound and 4D sensory effects helped bring the virtual worlds to life. At certain moments, the movements made the adventure feel surprisingly real, adding an extra layer of excitement to the experience.

It was a little thrilling at first, especially as this was my first time trying this kind of attraction, but that was also what made it fun. Located on Level 2 of Studio City’s West Wing, Stardust Terminal offered a refreshing change from the usual hotel and sightseeing experiences, and it was a fun way to add a little adventure to my Macau trip.

Breakfast at Studio City

My dining experience at Studio City was limited to breakfast, so I did not get the opportunity to explore the resort’s wider restaurant selection. Nevertheless, breakfast was part of my stay and gave me a chance to start the day before continuing my Macau itinerary.

Studio City has more than 30 culinary destinations, ranging from refined Cantonese dining to casual American-style eateries and extensive buffet offerings. While I did not personally dine at these restaurants, their variety reflects the resort’s broad approach to food and beverage experiences.

Among the property’s notable dining venues is Pearl Dragon, a Michelin-starred Cantonese restaurant celebrated for its lychee-wood-roasted meats, dim sum and Chinese tea service. For something more casual, Joyride Diner offers a retro 1950s American setting with red vinyl booths, jukebox-inspired styling, smashed burgers and thick shakes.

Spotlight serves a buffet in a 1930s Art Deco-inspired dining hall, with live-cooking stations, chilled seafood and regional Asian dishes. Meanwhile, The Boulevard & Gourmet Walk combines shopping with a selection of dining options, including Macanese street food, Japanese specialities and international favourites.

Although I did not have the opportunity to sample these restaurants during my visit, the range of choices means guests have several options to consider when planning their meals at the resort.

The Verdict: Is Studio City Macau Worth a Stay?

My stay at Studio City Macau offered a glimpse into a different side of Macau, one where cinematic design, comfortable accommodation and entertainment come together under one roof.

The Celebrity Premium Vista Room was a highlight, particularly its spacious layout, practical amenities and floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking Cotai. Watching the neighbouring resort towers illuminate the skyline at night was a memorable part of the experience, while breakfast and my opportunity to discover Stardust added to my time at the property.

Beyond my personal experience, Studio City’s wider facilities — from the Golden Reel and indoor water park to its cinema, event arena and diverse dining venues — make it an appealing option for travellers seeking more than a conventional hotel stay.

For anyone planning a trip to Macau, Studio City is worth considering for its combination of accommodation, entertainment and distinctive architecture. My stay may not have covered every attraction or restaurant, but it gave me a taste of what makes this resort one of the recognisable destinations along the Cotai Strip.
