Holiday Villa Hotel & Suites Kota Bharu: A Place to Come Back to

The city of Kota Bharu in Peninsular Malaysia’s east coast state of Kelantan gives you plenty of reasons to head out. But Holiday Villa Hotel & Suites Kota Bharu gives you a good reason to come back due to easy comforts, unhurried mornings, a poolside dinner, and all conveniences of Wakaf Che Yeh.

There is a certain comfort in knowing where you will end the day.

When travelling, most of our attention naturally goes to the places ahead. Where to eat, what to see, which road to take, and whether there is enough time to squeeze in one more stop before sunset.

But after a few days of moving around, I find myself appreciating the quieter part of a trip just as much: coming back.

Coming back to a room where the bags have been left, the shoes are by the door, and there is finally nowhere else to be.

That is how my four days and three nights in Kota Bharu transpire at Holiday Villa Hotel & Suites Kota Bharu.

Located in Wakaf Che Yeh, the hotel becomes my base in the destination. It is where each day begins, where I return to in after going out, and where the evenings eventually slow down.

And perhaps because the days in Kota Bharu are filled with things to see and places to go, having somewhere familiar to return to makes the whole trip feels easier.

Finding a room that suits the trip

One thing I noticed about Holiday Villa Hotel & Suites Kota Bharu is that the accommodation is not limited to one type of stay.

There are six room categories. Superior, Deluxe, Deluxe Twin, Deluxe Triple, Studio Suite, and Family Suite, which gives a little more flexibility depending on who you are travelling with.

For a short getaway for two, a regular room might be all you need. If you are travelling with friends or family, having options such as a Deluxe Triple or Family Suite makes more sense.

For me, the room is less about spending the whole day indoors and more about having somewhere comfortable to return to. After all, Kota Bharu has plenty to see outside.

Still, there is something satisfying about walking into your room after a long day, putting everything down, and knowing you do not have to go anywhere else for a while.

The bags can wait. The itinerary can wait.

For a little while, you can too.

The relief of being back

There is always a moment during a trip when you realise you have had enough for the day. Not necessarily because you are bored, but because your body has decided it is time to stop.

After spending hours outside, walking around, eating, and moving from one place to another, returning to the hotel feels like pressing pause.

The bags are left in the room. The day’s clothes are put aside. A quick shower, a little time to sit down, and suddenly the rush of the day does not seem important anymore.

This is also when I start noticing the hotel’s facilities in a different way.

There is an indoor swimming pool, a gym, and sauna, alongside practical facilities such as complimentary parking and Wi-Fi. There is also a surau (small Muslim praying space) within the hotel, which is a thoughtful convenience for Muslim travellers.

The indoor pool, in particular, catches my attention.

There is something quite nice about having a swimming pool indoors, especially when you are staying somewhere that has unpredictable weather. It gives you the option of taking a swim without having to worry about the heat or rain outside.

Not every stay needs to be packed with activities; sometimes, a quick dip in the pool is enough.

An evening around the table

During one of the evenings, the hotel serves steamboat and grill dinner. The set is priced at RM79.90 for two, available from 6:00 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. at the poolside.

There is something about steamboat and grill that makes dinner feel less formal. After a full day out, it turns out to be the sort of meal that suits the mood perfectly.

You do not simply sit down and wait for the food to arrive. You choose what you want, place it on the grill or into the soup, wait for it to cook, and keep going back for more.

That dinner takes its time. And perhaps that was what I liked about it.

Travel days can sometimes feel like a series of ticking boxes. Visit this place. Take a photograph. Try this food. Get back in the vehicle. Move on to the next stop.

But around a table, everything slows down, giving my travelling companions and I time to talk about the day, decide what to eat next, and simply enjoy being there.

And because the dinner is served by the poolside, the setting gives the evening a slightly different feel from having dinner in a conventional restaurant.

By the end of the evening, the hotel no longer feels like somewhere we had merely come back to for the night; it becomes part of the day itself.

Slow mornings in Kota Bharu

Mornings start with breakfast at Lagenda Restaurant, the hotel’s all-day dining outlet that serves breakfast from 7:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m.

I always enjoy hotel breakfasts when travelling because they are usually slower than the rest of the day.

You are awake, but the day has not quite started yet.

There is coffee, breakfast, and a little time to think about where the day might take you.

I do not always want to wake up on holiday and immediately rush out.

Sometimes, I want to sit for a little longer, finish my coffee, have something to eat, and let the day arrive on its own.

Perhaps that is why breakfast has become one of those small details I remember from a stay, even when I cannot remember everything else.

Everything you might need is nearby

Another thing I came to appreciate during my stay is just how convenient the hotel’s location is.

Holiday Villa & Suites Kota Bharu sits in Wakaf Che Yeh, and there is quite a lot within easy reach.

Right next to the hotel are familiar names such as McDonald’s, ZUS Coffee, and FamilyMart. There is also Watsons, a pharmacy, a clinic, and a laundrette nearby.

At first, these might not sound like the kind of things you would look for when choosing a hotel in Kota Bharu. But after a few days of travelling, you begin to realise how useful they are.

A forgotten toiletry suddenly becomes an easy problem to solve.

Need a coffee before heading out? It is right there.

Want to grab a snack late at night? FamilyMart is just next door.

Need medicine? There is a pharmacy nearby.

Laundry piling up after a few days of travelling? You know where to go.

Though these are small conveniences, when added up, they make the stay feel less complicated.

I suppose the best hotel locations are not always about being surrounded by the biggest attractions. Sometimes, it is about having the everyday things you need close enough you do not have to think twice.

A little taste of Wakaf Che Yeh

Staying in Wakaf Che Yeh also means that evenings come with their own little adventure. The area is known for its lively night market, with stalls and shops coming alive as the sun goes down.

After spending the day exploring Kota Bharu, it is nice to know that there is still somewhere nearby to wander if I had the energy.

But if I do not? That is fine too.

One of the nice things about travelling is having the freedom to change your mind.

You can decide to go out for a little while or you can decide that the bed looks much more appealing, hence there is no right way to spend an evening.

Sometimes, the best decision is simply to return to the hotel, take a shower, and call it a night.

What stays with you

Four days and three nights is not a particularly long stay. But long enough, perhaps, to notice the little things.

The way mornings begin.

The relief of returning after a long day.

A dinner that stretches a little longer than expected.

A quiet swim indoors.

The convenience of having a coffee shop, FamilyMart, pharmacy or shop just outside.

The ease of knowing that you do not have to plan every single moment.

When I think about staying at Holiday Villa Hotel & Suites Kota Bharu, I do not treat it as a destination because Kota Bharu is already the destination.

The hotel is simply the place I stay when getting to know the destination. And maybe that is exactly what I want from a place like this: a comfortable base that lets me go out and explore without making the return feel like another part of the itinerary.

Because travelling is not only about the places we discover; it is also about the little spaces in between. The mornings before we leave, the meals we take our time over, the swim before dinner, and the evenings when we finally stop moving.

Every so often, those are the moments we remember most.

And after four days and three nights in Kota Bharu, Holiday Villa & Suites Kota Bharu becomes one of those places I am glad to come back to…
