Ipoh + Penang: City Adventures & Scenic Getaways All in One Go!

Four days. Two destinations. Zero travel headaches. From Ipoh’s mysterious heritage and lush escapes to Penang’s hilltop views, vibrant streets, and beach sunsets, let Klook handle the logistics while you focus on exploring, eating, and making memories.

There’s something about doing Ipoh and Penang in one trip that makes you feel like you’ve somehow managed to squeeze several different holidays into just four days. One minute you’re exploring an old castle, the next you’re surrounded by greenery, and suddenly you’re watching the sunset by the sea on an island.

Honestly? Not a bad way to spend a few days.

Klook takes the Gaya Travel Magazine team on a four-day journey covering Ipoh and Penang together with private transport and a guide, making the entire experience much easier because now, there are two things that we do not have to think about. No arguing over directions, no wondering where to park, and definitely no “who wants to drive next?” after a long day.

So, if you’re thinking of putting Ipoh and Penang into the same getaway, here’s what the journey looks like.

Ipoh: Where Things Feel a Little Slower

Ipoh has a way of making you slow down without really asking you to. Maybe it’s the old buildings, the quieter streets, or simply the fact that there’s always another little corner worth stopping by.

We start at Kellie’s Castle, and honestly, it’s hard not to get curious the moment you see it. The unfinished mansion comes with plenty of stories and legends, so walking around the building feels a little like stepping into the middle of a mystery. You look at one room, then another, and suddenly you’re wondering what the place could have looked like if everything had actually been completed.

Mind you, you don’t need to be a history enthusiast to enjoy it. Sometimes exploring a place with a slightly mysterious past is enough to keep things intriguing.

Then comes Tasik Cermin, which offers a completely different mood. Surrounded by greenery, it gives us a chance to step away from the city and breathe deeper. After all the walking and exploring, having a quiet place to take in the scenery feels nice.

And because a trip apparently cannot run entirely on scenery and good intentions, we swing by Kin Loong Valley Changi Jiang White Coffee for a meal before continuing our Ipoh adventure.

Later, we wander around Concubine Lane and the surrounding Old Town area, where the whole atmosphere changes again. There are heritage buildings, street art, and plenty of little details that make you want to stop every few minutes. You know it when you tell yourself you’ll just take one photo and somehow end up with 27!

Exactly that.

There is no need to rush around Ipoh either. Having private transport via Klook means we can move between different stops without worrying too much about the logistics. We can simply get in, sit back, and let someone else handle the road while we figure out what is in store next.

After a whole day of exploring, checking into WEIL Hotel Ipoh is so heavenly! Getting back to the hotel and finally able to put our feet up feels like a luxurious reward.

And maybe that’s what makes Ipoh work so well as part of a getaway. There’s history, there’s nature, there’s old-town charm, but there’s also enough space to simply slow down and enjoy being somewhere else.

Penang: A Little More of Everything

The next day, we head to cosmopolitan Penang, which has a different kind of energy. It is busier, more colourful, and somehow manages to squeeze heritage, nature, beaches and plenty of things to see into one island.

We start with the climb up Penang Hill, a nice change after spending so much time exploring Ipoh’s streets and heritage spots. Getting up there means swapping old-town buildings for a memorably panoramic vista of the island, which all travellers must do!

And just when you think Penang is all about George Town, the Tropical Fruit Farm reminds you that there’s a much greener side to the destination too. It is nice to step away from the hustle and bustle of the city and discover something more bucolic.

Then comes the time for us to discover Batu Ferringhi, where the whole mood slows down again, but accompanied with more verve by those who seek a beachside vibe.

There’s really not much you need to do at the beach; simply sit down, feel the sea breeze, stare at the water, and if you happen to catch the sunset, just stay there a little longer. Perhaps, this is probably why beach stops always end up taking longer than planned.

For the Penang leg of the trip, lyf Georgetown Penang serves as our base. After a full day out, having somewhere to return to for a quick reset is exactly what we need because apparently “we’ll take it easy today” is something travellers say right before adding another three stops to the itinerary.

The morning after starts with breakfast at Kenny Hills Bakers before we head out again, this time to explore more of George Town.

Chew Jetty and Armenian Street are the kind of places where wandering around is half the fun. There is no need to rush from one point to another. Just walk, look around, take photos, and notice the details along the way.

We also visit Boon San Tong Khoo Kongsi, which adds another layer to the heritage experience. By this point, it is becoming pretty obvious that Penang has history hiding behind almost every corner.

And yes, we do stop for food along the way because walking around all day requires fuel. Bee Hwa Cafe gives us a chance to sit down, recharge, and get ready for the next part of the day.

Then it is time for UMI UMI Penang, where we have our dinner but taken to a completely different level. While we have our meal served course-by-course, we are also feted with an immersive live show, making the experience notably more spectacular than just another stop on the itinerary.

Honestly, after spending the day walking around heritage streets, UMI UMI Penang allows us to end the day on a high note!.

The next day, before heading home, we decide to enjoy our last moments by savouring roti bakar (toasted bread) at Haji Lane, browsing around Chowrasta Market, and picking up a few local snacks. Nothing too complicated, but somehow these are the little things that tend to stick with you.

After four days, Ipoh and Penang feel like two completely different personalities that somehow work well together.

Ipoh gives you the slower pace, old buildings, mysterious stories, greenery, and quiet moments. Penang brings more energy, with its heritage streets, hilltop views, beaches, and unexpected experiences.

And having private transport and a day guide via Klook means we can spend less time figuring out the logistics and more time actually enjoying where we were.

Maybe that’s the nice thing about doing both in one trip. You get a little bit of everything without having to choose just one kind of getaway.

Heritage? Check. Nature? Check. Sea views? Obviously.

And when we arrive home, we’re already searching on Klook’s site to figure out where to go next!

Gaya Travel Magazine team members extend our sincere thanks to Klook for making the writer’s trip possible and smooth-sailing.
