Johor Bahru Has More Going On Than We Thought

Tourism Johor takes the Gaya Travel Magazine team to experience Johor’s heritage, culture, adventure spots, and even a few after-dark experiences, making us realise that there’s actually more to do in Johor Bahru.

Johor Bahru, affectionately called JB, is one of those places that’s easy to think you already know. Shopping? Check. Food? Obviously. Cross the border? Probably.

Apparently, there are more to Johor Bahru than meets the eye. One minute you might be watching a traditional performance, and the next you are climbing walls, riding around the city in a buggy, and trekking around a zoo at night.

So, if you’re looking for things to do in JB beyond the usual routine, the following are a few ideas that we recommend..

Get a Some Cultural Lessons at Yayasan Warisan Johor

Let’s start with something a little more cultural.

At Kompleks Warisan Sultan Abu Bakar, Yayasan Warisan Johor gives visitors a closer look at the state’s history and heritage. Travellers get to explore the galleries, listen to an exclusive briefing, and learn more about the stories behind Johor’s cultural identity.

And the place is not just about the exhibits.

There are also art demonstrations and local cultural performances that make the visit feel much more alive. Watching the performances in person gives travellers a better appreciation of the traditions provided during the briefing and walkthrough.

It’s a nice reminder that there’s more to JB than what you see on the surface.

Then Things Got Very Physical at TMIYC

After all of the lowdown on Johor culture, it is time for travellers to move.

And by move, we mean actually MOVE.

Tunku Mahkota Ismail Youth Centre, or TMIYC, has plenty of activities for anyone who enjoys a little adrenaline rush. Here, travellers get to try everything from ziplining and rope courses to, trying out all of the obstacles at the rock yard such as wall climbing and bouldering, including getting the joints worked up at the parkour park.

MInd you, some activities look easier than they actually are (*pant*).

By the end of it, travellers are bound to be sweaty, tired, and probably questioning their life’s choices.

But that’s also what makes it fun. If you’re travelling with friends, this is the kind of place where watching everyone attempt the activities can become part of the entertainment too.

Just don’t expect to leave with perfectly fresh hair, or body odour…

Who Says Zoos Are Only for Daytime?

Just as the day winds down, travellers should head to Zoo Johor for something a little different: the Night Zoo.

Walking through a zoo after dark naturally feels different from visiting it during the day. Everything is quieter, darker, and somehow a little more mysterious.

The experience also gives you the chance to see some animals when they are active at night, offering a different perspective from the usual daytime visit.

It’s the kind of activity that makes you look at a familiar place differently.

And yes, walking around a dark zoo does make every unexpected sound just a little more intriguing, and even thrilling.

See Johor Bahru from the Back of a Buggy

If walking around the city sounds like too much work after all that climbing, we have a solution: take the buggy to explore JB’s streets.

The buggy tour with JOTIC starts from the JOTIC building at Zero Mile, taking travellers around selected JB’s landmarks such as Bangunan Sultan Ibrahim, Jalan Wong Ah Fook, Johor Ancient Temple, the ‘I Love Segget’ sign, and Arulmigu Sri Rajamariamman Temple.

Instead of rushing from one landmark to another, travellers can simply sit back and take everything in.

The evening weather (as long as it does not rain) makes the ride even nicer, with the city lights radiating and the night breeze doing its thing.

Basically, it is sightseeing without having to count your steps.

Take a Different Look at Islamic Art

On the next day, travellers can head to Galeri Aura Islam in Iskandar Puteri.

The gallery offers a closer look at Islamic art, architecture, and knowledge, with plenty of details to take in as travellers explore the space.

Compared with the more action-packed activities earlier in the trip, this is definitely a quieter experience.

It’s the kind of place where you can take your time, examine the exhibits, and appreciate the details without feeling like you need to rush through everything.

End Things with a Little More History

Before wrapping up the journey, travellers should make the final stop at Muzium Tokoh in Johor Bahru.

The museum gives visitors a chance to learn more about Johor’s history and the prominent figures who have contributed to the state over the years.

After spending the trip jumping between adventure activities, cultural experiences, and city tours, ending it with a little history is a fitting way to wrap things up.

And honestly, it is a good reminder that sometimes the stories behind a place are just as interesting as the places themselves.

So, What Else Is There to Do in JB?

Quite a lot, apparently.

From getting to know Johorean culture and heritage at Yayasan Warisan Johor to testing your courage at TMIYC, exploring Zoo Johor after dark and cruising around the city by buggy, there are plenty of ways to experience JB beyond the usual stops.

You can go all out and make yourself sweat, slow things down with some culture and history, or simply hop on a buggy and let someone else do the driving.

Either way, maybe JB deserves a little more than a quick stopover, because there’s more to discover once you actually stick around longer.
