Amari Kuala Lumpur: The Stay That Stayed with Us

Choosing a hotel in Kuala Lumpur can feel like speed dating. One wins you over with a fantastic location but disappoints with tired rooms. Another dazzles with beautiful interiors but leaves you wrestling with traffic just to get anywhere. Then there are those that promise luxury, only to feel oddly soulless once you check in. It is rare to find one that gets almost everything right. After spending a night at Amari Kuala Lumpur, I found myself wondering why more city hotels do not.

Managed by ONYX Hospitality Group, Amari Kuala Lumpur has built a reputation among business travellers thanks to its strategic location. However, reducing it to merely a business hotel would be doing it a great disservice. It is a property with genuine character, thoughtfully designed spaces and an unmistakable sense of place that makes it just as appealing for leisure travellers.

Arrival

The experience begins the moment you step through its doors. Standing proudly at the entrance is an elegant mangosteen sculpture, a symbolic nod to the harmonious blend of Thai and Malaysian influences that define the hotel. Step inside, and another detail quietly works its magic. The hotel’s signature scent lingers gently through the lobby, blending osmanthus and champak flowers into something that instantly softens the mood. In fact, it felt almost therapeutic. Some hotels impress through grandeur. Amari chooses fragrance, and somehow it works.

The lobby itself deserves a moment of admiration. It is colourful without being loud, contemporary without feeling cold. Vibrant furnishings inject plenty of personality, while striking wall sculptures by German artist Rainer Lagemann add an artistic touch. The reception counter, inspired by a traditional wooden sampan, pays tribute to Malaysia’s cultural heritage, while a cosy Cultural Corner invites guests to slow down over a game of congkak or batu seremban. It is these thoughtful touches that transform a functional lobby into somewhere you actually want to linger.

Accommodation

Check-in was refreshingly swift, and before long, my companion and I were shown to our Club One-Bedroom Suite. Spacious is perhaps an understatement. The suite features a separate bedroom, a generous living area, a dining space and an ensuite bathroom, making it feel far more like a stylish city apartment than a hotel room.

Waiting for us were a beautifully arranged fruit platter and an assortment of desserts, but the most memorable surprise came in the form of personalised postcards featuring our own photographs. It is such a simple gesture, yet it transformed an ordinary welcome into one we are unlikely to forget. Even the complimentary batu seremban set presented to Club guests carried a touch of nostalgia. I could not remember the last time I had one in my hands.

The suite embraces bold colours that stay true to the Amari identity while maintaining a clean, uncluttered aesthetic. A standout feature is the artwork displayed in the dining area, created by one of the winning artists from Setia KARYA, an initiative by S P Setia that celebrates and nurtures local artistic talent. It is another subtle reminder that the hotel is deeply rooted in the surrounding community.

As someone who values a comfortable bed more than almost any hotel facility, I am pleased to report that Amari delivered. The king-sized bed had just the right amount of firmness, supportive enough for my perpetually tired back while still feeling wonderfully cocooning after a full day on my feet. The pillow menu is another thoughtful touch for guests who know exactly how they like to sleep.

Meanwhile, the bathroom offers both a bathtub and a separate rain shower, complemented by luxurious PAÑPURI bath amenities that elevate even the simplest evening routine. One feature I particularly appreciated was the 3M™ Drinking Water Filter System installed at the sink. Having unlimited access to clean, filtered drinking water meant we could simply refill our own bottles throughout the stay instead of reaching for disposable plastic ones.

Dining

Breakfast at the hotel’s all-day dining Amaya Food Gallery quickly became one of the highlights of our stay. The buffet is extensive without feeling excessive, offering an impressive spread of Malaysian favourites, Western classics and vegetarian dishes. Everything is clearly labelled, making it refreshingly easy for guests with dietary preferences to navigate the selection.

That said, breakfast is only part of the story. Returning for lunch proved equally rewarding. The Amaya Fried Rice was easily one of the most memorable dishes of our stay. On paper, fried rice hardly sounds exciting, but every spoonful arrived smoky with wok hei, gently spicy, and deeply comforting. Sometimes the simplest dishes are the hardest to perfect, but this one was absolutely on point. We also sampled the limited-time Mee Curry Udang Galah, created to celebrate ONYX Hospitality Group’s 60th anniversary. Loaded with generously sized freshwater prawns and enveloped in a rich, creamy curry broth, it was indulgent without becoming overwhelming.

As Club guests, evenings naturally ended at Club TGA for cocktail hour. The menu changes daily, keeping each visit fresh, while the selection of savoury bites and desserts never feels repetitive. One small detail that earned bonus points from both of us was the wireless charging stations built into selected tables. It is the kind of practical feature you do not realise you appreciate until your phone battery drains below 10 per cent.

Facilities and superb accessibility

After all the good food, the 24-hour fitness centre offers a welcome opportunity to work off the extra calories. Although compact, it is equipped with modern machines suitable for a satisfying workout. For something more leisurely, the outdoor swimming pool offers a relaxing retreat, particularly at sunset, when the golden light reflects beautifully across the surrounding skyline.

Of course, one of Amari Kuala Lumpur’s strongest advantages lies beyond its walls. The hotel offers complimentary shuttle services during weekends to several of Kuala Lumpur’s major attractions, including Pasar Seni, The Exchange TRX and the iconic Petronas Twin Towers, making sightseeing wonderfully convenient.

Those who prefer exploring independently will appreciate the hotel’s excellent connectivity. Abdullah Hukum LRT station sits just a few steps away, providing seamless access to destinations across the city. If shopping is on the itinerary, a covered walkway links the hotel directly to Mid Valley Megamall and The Gardens Mall, allowing guests to browse, dine and indulge without worrying about Kuala Lumpur’s unpredictable weather. Even a nearby 7-Eleven proves handy for late-night snacks or forgotten travel essentials.

A wholesome stay with heartfelt service

Throughout our stay at Amari Kuala Lumpur, what impressed me most was not a single standout moment but rather the consistency of the service. Every interaction felt warm, genuine and attentive, yet never intrusive. The staff seemed to understand exactly when to step in and when to give guests the space to simply enjoy their stay.

Whether you are planning a weekend city break, a shopping escape, a food-focused holiday, or even a productive business trip, Amari Kuala Lumpur makes a compelling case. It delivers comfort, connectivity, thoughtful design and heartfelt hospitality in equal measure, making it far more than simply another city hotel.

In case you are wondering, the rates start from MYR345+ for room only, while the Club One-Bedroom Suite starts from MYR600+, inclusive of breakfast.
