Hilton Kuching: A City Grand Dame Revitalised

Hilton Kuching is the first landmark international hotel chain ever to open in Kuching, the capital of the Malaysian state of Sarawak. Though the hotel is already 37 years old, the recent completion of its extensive refurbishment allows it to maintain relevance as the city’s premier destination for families, business travellers, and culinary enthusiasts.

From the moment you arrive at Hilton Kuching, you’re bound to be swept away by the sweeping floor-to-ceiling views of the Sarawak River and Kuching’s dynamic skyline. The hotel interiors, inspired by Borneo’s breathtaking landscapes, weave together contemporary Southeast Asian elegance with bamboo-inspired accents and nostalgic retro touches, creating a space that feels both timeless and exhilaratingly fresh.

“This transformation is more than a renovation; it is a reimagination of Hilton Kuching’s place in the city,” says Adrian Teh, General Manager of Hilton Kuching. “Every refreshed space, from our guestrooms and dining venues to our meeting facilities and leisure areas, has been designed with intention, drawing inspiration from Kuching’s heritage while embracing the needs of today’s traveller. With our prime waterfront location, elevated service, and strong connection to the local community, we are proud to deliver an experience that feels both familiar and refreshingly new, consistently exceeding guest expectations while reflecting the spirit of modern Kuching hospitality.”

A new chapter of firsts

Hilton Kuching’s bold renovation brings groundbreaking firsts to the city. Malaysia’s inaugural Hilton Kids Club is a magical haven for young explorers, offering a supervised wonderland with an indoor play zone, a cosy reading nook, climbing structures, hands-on craft stations, and interactive games. These thoughtfully curated activities ignite creativity and connect children to Sarawak’s vibrant culture. Following this is RYE, Hilton’s whiskey-forward speakeasy, which promises to elevate Kuching’s nightlife with sophisticated charm, debuted in the fourth quarter of 2025.

These exciting additions complement the hotel’s fully reimagined guestrooms, enhanced wellness facilities, and innovative dining concepts. The Executive Lounge, an exclusive retreat for Hilton Honors Diamond members and Executive Floor guests, blends sophistication with serenity. With intimate seating, curated local artwork, and panoramic river views, the lounge offers tailored food and beverage experiences, discreet and personalised service, and a tranquil space to work, unwind, or simply soak in the city’s beauty.

Families will love the revamped Kids’ Swimming Pool, complete with a cascading waterfall, next to an open-air courtyard called The Lawn, as well as the separate 25-metre stylish pool connected to The Terrace, a versatile alfresco oasis, perfect for sunset cocktails and relaxed dining. Both The Lawn and The Terrace are suitable for memorable outdoor functions. Alternatively, the redesigned Grand Ballroom and 10 meeting rooms, all equipped with cutting-edge audio-visual technology, provide inspiring indoor settings for conferences, weddings, and celebrations.

It must be said: Gaya Travel Magazine deeply admires the renewed guest rooms, which are a highlight in themselves. Locally inspired artwork, indigenous motifs, and details reflecting Kuching’s diverse heritage bring character to the interiors, while expansive windows frame inspiring views of the river and beyond.

With soothing neutral tones, a contemporary retro-modern edge, white marble finishes, chrome accents, and upgraded amenities, the rooms instantly put guests at ease while honouring both the hotel’s legacy and the city’s cultural richness, making your stay distinctive. And the bed, which employs King Koil bedding system, is remarkably comfortable that you wish you could stay in it all day.

Memorable in-house dining

Interestingly, the hotel is not just about design – it is the place where guests get to enjoy gastronomic delights, especially the scrumptious dishes whipped up at the hotel’s halal-certified Chinese Cantonese restaurant that marries classic Cantonese favourites with a distinctive Sarawak twist named Toh Yuen (be sure to order the to-die-for signature butter prawn and fresh mango pudding), as well as the notable breakfast buffet spread at the all-day dining River View Café, which boasts an expanded grill selection, enhanced buffet stations, and sweeping views of the Sarawak River.

On the same note, the hotel’s all-day café at the lobby, aptly called The Koffee, dispenses locally roasted coffee alongside fresh bakes and indulgent whole cakes, while the newly renovated alfresco space next to the swimming pool on Level 1 called The Terrace, as mentioned earlier, is ideal for sunset cocktails and relaxed, open-air dining.

Going beyond the interiors

Hilton Kuching’s connection to the city and Sarawak goes beyond what is offered within the hotel. Through partnerships with local artists and food producers, the hotel weaves the region’s creative spirit into every moment. In collaboration with the Sarawak Tourism Board, guests are invited to dive into authentic experiences when staying at the hotel, from guided heritage walks through Kuching’s old town to culinary trails and artisan encounters.

“Our vision for tourism in Sarawak is built on sustainability, and it’s inspiring to see Hilton Kuching moving in the same direction,” says Sharzede Datu Haji Salleh Askor, CEO of the Sarawak Tourism Board. “Our collaboration reflects this shared commitment, creating guest experiences that are immersive, respectful, and memorable, while contributing positively to our environment and community.”

Testifying to the hotel’s ease in accessing Kuching’s surroundings, Hilton Kuching is actually within walking distance to the atmospheric Grand Bazaar, an area defined by characterful shops selling souvenirs encompassing local crafts and the Sarawakian specialty kek lapis (layered cake), charming restaurants, quaint cafes, different houses of worship, the elegant Old Courthouse that is now a vibrant social and cultural hub, and the educational free-entry Chinese History Museum.

Guests of the hotel can even cross the river to get to the other side by walking along the photogenic Darul Hana pedestrian bridge or taking the boat taxi for a closer look at the Dewan Undangan Negeri Sarawak (Sarawak State Legislative Assembly); the Margherita Fort, home to the well-curated Brooke Museum; and the Astana, the official residence of the Governor of Sarawak.

Guests are recommended to venture further by asking the hotel to arrange a trip to see the semi-wild orangutans roaming in the wild at the Semenggoh Wildlife Centre – a 40-minute bus ride away from Kuching – where the public can visit every day during these two time slots: 8:00-10:00 a.m., and 2:00-4:00 p.m. These orangutans were rescued from captivity, have undergone rehabilitation, and are now developing skills to survive in the jungle. This educational and memorable experience costs MYR150 per person.

Conclusion

With its unbeatable waterfront setting, warm and attentive service, and a seamless blend of family-friendly amenities, modern business facilities, and locally inspired design, Hilton Kuching offers an uplifting stay. The hotel celebrates Sarawak’s heritage, reimagined with modern sophistication, to create memories that linger long after you leave.
