Nobu Kuala Lumpur Celebrates Brand’s 30 Years of Culinary Excellence with an Exclusive Omakase

It’s been a while since I last stepped through the doors of Nobu Kuala Lumpur, but with the city’s dining scene evolving faster than TikTok trends, keeping up can be a job in itself. Yet, there are certain places that etch themselves into your memory, and Nobu is one of them. As a world-wide famous establishment that champions high-class Japanese dining with some Peruvian influences, being mediocre is never an option.

This year, the global culinary powerhouse celebrates its 30th anniversary, and they’ve pulled out all the stops with an exclusive 30-Year-Anniversary Omakase. Available from 7 until 13 October 2024, this omakase menu offers diners the chance to indulge in both timeless Nobu classics and contemporary creations.

“When designing these menus, we wanted to honour our journey, the dedication of our team members, and the incredible support we’ve received from our guests over the past 30 years. Many of these dishes are based on some of my earliest creations, so they are very close to my heart,” said Chef Nobu Matsuhisa, reflecting on the milestone.

Upon entering the restaurant for a preview of the omakase, I was greeted by a warm, sleek interior divided into various sections. A chic bar near the entrance sets the tone, while just beyond it is the sushi bar – where the sushi chefs, in typical Nobu style, crafts and serves sushi with almost meditative precision.

The first course to land before me was the Yontenmori, an exquisite quartet of Nobu classics. It starts with the Toro Tartare with Caviar, which is as decadent as it sounds, delivering a knockout punch of rich, silky flavours. Then comes the iconic Yellowtail Jalapeño, a dish that has been copied far and wide but never quite duplicated. Adding to that are the Seabass Tiradito, which marries Japanese finesse with a zest of Peruvian flair, and my personal favourite, the Salmon Tataki with Karashi Sumiso – its creamy sauce is nothing short of heavenly, pairing perfectly with the tender salmon.

Next up was a pristine sushi platter: think Tuna Nigiri, White Fish Matsuhisa Style, and Scallop Dry Miso, all prepared with the same meticulous care. Of course, to throw in some fun in the mix, the Nori Taco with Caviar excites the palate with a Rubik’s cube of textures and indulgence. The culinary parade marched on with classics like the Black Cod Butter Lettuce and King Crab with Amazu Ponzu, two dishes that have rightfully earned their iconic status. The King Crab was so good, I had to restrain myself from ordering seconds. No one wants to be that person, but I was that close!

By now, I was teetering on the edge of full, but then the A5 Japanese Wagyu Beef Anticucho appeared, which I simply couldn’t resist. And boy oh boy, I was glad I made a room for it because this dish was a winner right off the bat due to its succulence!

And then, the sweet finale. Desserts rolled in starting from the decadent Strawberry Cheesecake to the playful Mochido (a mochi-doughnut hybrid). Each of them is divine, but my heart was truly stolen by the Milk Chocolate and Sesame Cream due to its playful textures and unique flavours that transported me back to my childhood, evoking fond memories of munching on rice crackers.

So, is Nobu’s 30th Anniversary Omakase worth it? Absolutely! Dining here feels like a celebration, not just of food, but of the craft itself. The service? Impeccable! Each course arrives in perfect time, allowing you to relish both the food and the company. Yes, it’s a splurge, but trust me, some indulgences are worth every penny, and this Nobu’s 30th Anniversary Omakase is one of them.

The Nobu 30-Year Anniversary Omakase is priced at RM680++ per pax, and are subject to 10% Service Charge and 6% SST.
