Bentong, 23 January 2013 – Pertubuhan Pelindung Khazanah Alam (PEKA), a Malaysian rainforest advocate, is organising an adventure race in the effort to arrest further destruction of Malaysian rainforests and encourage reforestation.

Called the “Save Our Rainforest Race”, this 10km adventure styled event will kick off on Saturday, the 2nd of March 2013 at the Chamang Waterfall in Bentong, Pahang. PEKA is proud to present Zainalabidin Mohamed as the spokesperson for the event. It is also well supported by personalities such as Imran Ajmain and Datuk Khadijah Ibrahim.

PEKA also collaborates with RockCorps Malaysia, a non-governmental organisation that encourages volunteerism among youths, to raise awareness about the need to stop deforestation among the young. Those who are interested to participate in the race must form into groups of two persons each and register online at www.pekamalaysia.org. The fee is RM80 per person.

The proceeds from this race will be channelled towards future reforestation efforts such as purchasing rainforest tree saplings and conducting tree-planting activities. On race day, the organiser will open booths for new registrations and pre-registered participants beginning at 7.30 a.m. Each team will be given a race pack comprising contestant numbers, sponsored t-shirts, a tree sapling and food for breakfast and lunch.

Teams will begin the half-day event by hiking 5km uphill. Along the way, participants will get to learn and appreciate nature by completing activities or tasks at specific checkpoints. Once at the top, teams will then have to plant their tree saplings at the allocated spots. The teams then race downhill to the finish the race. The first 20 teams to cross the finish line will receive prizes.

The underlying objective of the race is for the public to enjoy nature at its best – with its radiant woodlands and crystal clear water streams and waterfalls – while realising that Malaysians need to protect the country’s rainforests because they supply water and oxygen. Public must deeply understand the fact that the rapid deforestation in Malaysia will further escalate the country’s water and environmental woes.

Don’t wait, REGISTER NOW ONLINE at www.pekamalaysia.org!
