Unwind in Gunung Mulu’s Wild Beauty

Deep in the heart of Borneo, beyond the gentle bustle of Kuching and the coastal calm of Miri, lies a place where time slows to the rhythm of the rainforest. It is here, in Gunung Mulu National Park, that nature speaks in hushed tones, reminding you of the beauty of the untamed.

Why You’ll Love Mulu

  • Disconnect to reconnect – with no phone signal, nature’s soundtrack becomes your constant companion.
  • A UNESCO World Heritage Site with the world’s largest cave passages, crystal-clear rivers, and ancient rainforest waiting to be explored.
  • Activities for everyone – from exploring Deer and Lang Caves, witnessing the Bat Exodus, to picnicking and swimming in the clear, cool waters of Clearwater River.
  • Peaceful stays – whether at Mulu Marriott Resort or other accommodations, waking up and falling asleep to the sounds of the rainforest is an experience in itself.
  • Fresh air, open skies, and greenery everywhere, helping you slow down, breathe, and appreciate the beauty in simplicity.

Arrival: A Hidden World Unfolds

Flying into Mulu on a small MASwings plane feels like entering a different world. Through the windows, emerald rainforest stretches endlessly, with limestone cliffs rising through drifting mist. The air is fresher here, cool and scented with the promise of rain even on a clear day.

Our base, Mulu Marriott Resort & Spa, feels like a sanctuary hidden within the forest. Long wooden walkways link the villas and lobby, crossing over streams where fish dart beneath the surface. Every step is accompanied by the chorus of the jungle, the rustling of leaves, the call of distant birds, and the quiet gurgle of the river.

I fell in love with this resort almost immediately. The open-air lobby, with its comfortable front-row sofas facing the river, became my favourite spot. Here, I spent an entire day just sitting, watching the water flow, listening to the sounds of the jungle, and letting the breeze carry away the noise of the outside world. There is no phone signal here, but it doesn’t matter. In Mulu, you connect with nature instead.

Into the Caves: Deer Cave, Lang Cave, and the Bat Exodus

On our first full day in Mulu, we set out to explore Deer Cave and Lang Cave. A wooden boardwalk led us through lush rainforest, with towering trees filtering sunlight into dancing patterns along the path. Lang Cave was the first to greet us, its formations delicate and intricate, shaped over millennia by water and time.

Deer Cave, one of the largest cave passages in the world, felt like stepping into a cathedral of nature. The air inside was cool, and the towering limestone walls seemed to breathe with stories older than memory.

As dusk approached, we found a spot outside Deer Cave, waiting to witness the famed bat exodus. The sky was clear, the air still, and we watched as thousands of bats spiralled into the evening sky, forming waves and shifting patterns against the fading light. It was a breathtaking moment, a reminder of nature’s quiet spectacle when you are willing to wait and watch.

Clearwater Cave: A Picnic and a Swim

The next day, we took a longboat along the Melinau River, the breeze cooled our faces as the boat skimmed over clear water, limestone cliffs rising dramatically on either side. At Clearwater Cave, the air grew cool as we climbed the steps, entering a cavern where underground rivers glistened in the soft light, weaving through rock that tells stories of ancient time.

After exploring, we picnicked by the riverbank. The water here was so clear it appeared blue, cool to the touch, and inviting for a swim. I waded in carefully, and the water was deeper than I expected for my height, reminding me to respect nature’s quiet power even in moments of play. Floating in the clear, cold water, surrounded by the forest’s green embrace, was a moment of pure calm.

A Day of Stillness

On our final full day, a free and easy day, I chose to remain at the resort, finding peace in stillness. I spent the day at my favourite spot in the lobby, the sofa facing the river, letting the sounds of nature become my playlist: the rustle of leaves, the distant call of hornbills, the gentle rush of the water below. Here, without phone coverage, the world outside faded away, replaced by the quiet company of nature.

Sometimes, the best adventures are the quietest ones.

Saying Goodbye to Mulu

Leaving Mulu was bittersweet. As we boarded the flight back to Miri, I looked out at the rainforest unfolding below, grateful for the days spent among caves and rivers, for the laughter with travel companions, and for the silence that healed something within.

Mulu isn’t just about caves or rivers; it’s about how the place makes you feel. It slows you down, asks you to be present, and gently reminds you of the beauty in simplicity.

If you seek a place to disconnect from the noise of the world and reconnect with yourself, Mulu is definitely THAT place.
